Mazda MX-30 review
Mazda has joined the ultra-popular crossover SUV race with the MX-30, but how does it compare with its ever-growing list of rivals in this heavily crowded market segment?
The Mazda MX-30 is a practical and versatile family car that’s easy on the eye and also opens-up a range of different options for lease customers.
There are two variants available to lease, both with distinctive hatchback-SUV crossover styling and with a head-turning good looks.
You can lease a fully electric Mazda MX-30, which is an attractive urban commuter with a range of up to 124 miles between charges, and which can be rapidly recharged in around 33 minutes.
The other MX-30 is a plug-in hybrid, known as the MX-30 R-EV, which boasts an electric range of up to 53 miles between charges as well as overall fuel economy of up to 280 miles to the gallon - which should save you money at the fuel pumps.
The MX-30 R-EV hybrid is also unique in that it matches a 830cc rotary engine with a 17.8kWh battery. That rotary engine, as opposed to a traditional piston-powered internal combustion engine, makes for smoother power delivery and more potent acceleration.
Indeed, the MX-30 R-EV’s 170 hp results in a 0-62mph acceleration time of 9.1 seconds, which makes it quicker off the mark than the electric MX-30.
Whichever powertrain you choose, you can expect an abundance of equipment fitted as standard. Entry-level models - across both variants - feature an 8.8-inch touchscreen with sat nav, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, head-up display, adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, and a reversing camera.
The fully electric Mazda MX-30 makes for an ideal company car, with business lease customers enjoying a low Benefit in Kind (BIK) rate of 2%, which is fixed until the 2024/25 financial year.
The plug-in hybrid MX-30 could also be a good company car option. CO2 emissions are low at 21g/km, which again will mean a generous Benefit in Kind (BIK) tax rate.
The backwards-opening rear doors are another nice touch from Mazda that help make the MX-30 feel unique while also providing added convenience for passengers who are accessing the rear seats of the vehicle.
The MX-30 fits into the Mazda range alongside the petrol-powered CX-30 and the larger CX-5 SUV. It’s a rival to the likes of the Kia Niro, Hyundai Kona, and the plug-in hybrid version of the Volkswagen Golf.
