Iveco eDaily charges to towing world record with 153 tonne haul

If the question of just how much can an Iveco eDaily really tow has been playing on your mind, don’t worry, as Iveco has answered that and, in the process, set a new Guinness world record.

Built around a rugged truck chassis, the all-electric eDaily is a strong and sturdy vehicle and the standard 3.5-tonne panel van has proven its mettle by pulling more than 153 tonnes during the world record attempt.

And in recent days the Iveco eDaily went after a new world record - for ‘Heaviest weight towed by an electric van'.

The eDaily was hitched to a gargantuan Iveco X-Way Strator truck, which was specially engineered for Essex Haulage company G&B Finch to enable it to move large-scale loads of up to 150 tonnes. That capability was put to good use by adding a hefty Collard Group earth-mover weighing in at more than 50 tonnes, with an extra seven tonnes of ballast just for good measure. A fully-loaded Iveco X-Way 8x4 tipper truck was hitched behind that, followed by an all-terrain airport fire truck to complete the 153.58-tonne road train.

The Iveco eDaily van had no modifications made to it for the record attempt beyond a custom-made tow bar able to withstand the enormous forces. It was entirely standard, with an electric motor producing 190hp and 400Nm of torque, delivered to the ground via the rear wheels. The aim for Iveco was to unseat the previous holder of the record — a four-wheel drive Tesla Model X, which pulled 130 tonnes.

If you’re trying to prove that you have the strongest electric van, what better person to put behind the wheel than Britain’s current Strongest Man, Adam Bishop? As Bishop got the road train moving along the tarmac at Blackbushe airport, the eDaily made sure and steady progress along the 100ft long course, with Guinness World Record invigilators watching on from the finish line to verify its success.

“The van was incredible,” explained Adam Bishop. “The scale of its challenge and what it towed was unbelievable, but it rolled up its sleeves and got on with the job. Amazing!”

Using the ‘hi-power’ mode — a mode fitted as standard to the eDaily — during the run provided the all-electric van with bursts of additional power to assist in demanding towing conditions, helping it power over the finish line to claim the accolade.

“The Iveco eDaily has made history with this impressive record, reinforcing the strength, durability, and extensive capabilities of the eDaily,” said Iveco UK light business-line director Mike Cutts. “With an initial target of 130 tonnes, the eDaily far surpassed record requirements. I would like to thank everyone who came together to make this possible — it was a real team effort.”

Operators might not need to tow 153 tonnes, but with the Iveco eDaily achieving the Guinness world record, they can now confidently rely on the eDaily to cope with its 3.5-tonne towing capacity with ease.
