- Chinese manufacturer Xpeng set for UK launch
- Fully-electric Xpeng G6 will be first car introduced
- Should be an attractive Tesla Model Y alternative
- Specs and range yet to be announced
This is the Xpeng G6 - and it’s a new electric SUV set to arrive in the UK at the beginning of 2025 as a rival to the Tesla Model Y.
Chances are you’re not too familiar with Xpeng but with bases in Guangzhou, China, California, USA, and Munich, Germany, it’s a high-tech firm bidding to take on Tesla.
Like Tesla, Xpeng has a network of more than 1,000 of its own charging stations in China.
Xpeng also recently partnered with the Volkswagen Group to develop EV platforms, architecture and software, so it clearly knows what it’s doing.
Step forward, then, the G6 - the first electric vehicle from Xpeng that’ll be offered in the UK and a car that’s already on sale in other European markets.
It’s described as a ‘mid-size ultra-smart coupe SUV’ by Xpeng and which features ‘industry-leading capabilities, including 800-volt supercharging and an extended driving range’.
While official UK stats or prices for the G6 haven’t been revealed just yet, the Xpeng website reveals the firm’s Tesla Model Y rival has a range of up to 354 miles between charges and the ability to accelerate from 0-62 mph in around 4.0 seconds. A heat pump air conditioning unit also comes as standard to make sure that range figure stays realistic.
Rapid charging at up to 280 kW should see an energy replenish from 20-80% going by in just 20 minutes.
In Germany, where the G6 is already on sale, you can configure the coupe SUV in three distinct guises - RWD Standard Range, RWD Long Range, and AWD Performance. That again sees the G6 rubbing shoulders with the Tesla Model Y in terms of options.
Alex Tang, Head of International business at Xpeng, said. "We are excited to introduce UK consumers to a new standard in electric mobility, combining innovative technology with exceptional design to deliver an unparalleled experience that meets the demands of today's drivers. With a vision for AI-defined mobility, we aim to revolutionise the driving experience in the UK, making it safer, smarter, more sustainable and more pleasant in the near future."
The Xpeng G6 was recently awarded the full five stars for safety from assessors Euro NCAP.
