- First look at entry-level new electric VW
- Likely called ID.1
- Will launch alongside larger ID.2
- Target cost from £16,700
Here’s your first look at Volkswagen’s new entry-level electric vehicle - which could cost less than £17,000.
VW has big ambitions when it comes to the all-electric compact class.
It’s developing a single ‘SSP’ electric vehicle platform to be used across the VW and the wider Group’s other brands, including Audi, CUPRA and Skoda.
And as part of those plans, a cut-price, bargain basement EV will be born with a target price of 20,000 euros - around £16,700.
You’re looking at it here for the very first time before it’s teased further in March.
This wallet-friendly EV isn’t to be confused with the incoming ID.2 (above) - a production version of the ID.2 All concept - which is expected to arrive in dealerships in 2026 with a range of up to 280 miles between charges and a pricier target cost of £20,500.
The newly-revealed entry-level EV is, then, likely to be called the ID.1 and could be a spiritual successor to the discontinued VW e-Up!
The ID.1 is being billed as ‘attractive for a wide variety of user groups’.
VW CEO Thomas Schäfer added: “An affordable, high-quality, profitable electric Volkswagen from Europe for Europe. This is the Champions League of automobile manufacturing.”
The ID.1 won’t be the cheapest EV available, with those honours currently going to the £14,995 Dacia Spring (above) and the £15,995 Leapmotor T03 - but it could undercut the likes of the Fiat Grande Panda and Citroen e-C3 by a good couple of grand.
You will, though, have to wait for a while longer until you can order the VW ID.1, with the world premiere of the production model scheduled for 2027.
Fully-electric versions of the VW Golf and VW T-Roc are also inbound.
In the meantime, you can lease the compact VW ID.3 with Select Car Leasing from just £224 per month*.
