All-new Toyota C-HR revealed

This is the eye-catching, re-imagined Toyota C-HR, which can now be enjoyed as a frugal plug-in hybrid.

The C-HR is a compact crossover from Toyota that’s been around since 2016 and competes with rivals like the Nissan Qashqai and Volkswagen T-Roc.

The outgoing model was already easy on the eye, with its coupe-like lines and self-charging hybrid powertrain.

Now the C-HR has been treated to a major makeover which gives it a razor-sharp exterior, complete with shark-nosed front end, and the option of a 2.0-litre PHEV (plug-in hybrid electric vehicle) engine.

We first glimpsed the new C-HR earlier this year as a concept called the ‘Prologue’. Remarkably, the styling hasn’t changed between that prototype and this full production model, with Toyota calling the C-HR a ‘a concept car on the road’.

There are flush door handles, tight shut lines and a renewed focus on aerodynamics to improve economy. No wonder Toyota describes the C-HR as having a ‘super-coupe’ profile.

Three powertrains will be up for grabs, all of them electrified.

A 1.8-litre full hybrid powertrain - which also features on the Toyota Corolla - offers ‘significantly more power than the current 1.8-litre hybrid electric Toyota C-HR’.

A 2.0 litre full hybrid will offer even more oomph.

Meanwhile a 2.0-litre plug-in hybrid engine is being made available with the C-HR for the first time and which will provide ‘effortless all-electric EV driving for daily use and highly efficient hybrid electric performance for longer trips’, says Toyota.

A spokesperson adds: “The system can take much of the stress out of driving, with true EV capability with a very competitive range, and with Regeneration Boost – a ‘one pedal’-like driving experience – with three operating levels for easier progress in city traffic. It will also automatically adjust the drive mode to optimise energy efficiency, recognising the best opportunities for energy recharging when following a route via the car’s navigation system.”

The full spec of the different engines, including power outputs, will be revealed at a later date.

Inside the cabin you can expect a fully connected ‘in-car ecosystem’ where you can use a phone app, a touchscreen or voice commands to control a wide range of functions.

There’s the option of a 12.3 inch touchscreen, depending on which trim you choose, as well as a new digital key system, where you only need to have your phone in your pocket to access and start the vehicle.

The C-HR should also be exceptionally safe. There’s a full suite of driver assistance and safety systems, including innovative ‘Acceleration Suppression’ tech that slows any sudden use of the throttle when the risk of a collision with a vehicle ahead is detected.

Meanwhile Toyota has used an abundance of sustainable materials when creating the C-HR. Recycled plastics are used in 100 different parts, including the seat upholstery, while the production process has been streamlined to reduce Toyota’s carbon footprint.

When the Toyota C-HR becomes available to order, there will be a special Premiere Edition model, which features everything from perforated leather seats to a Skyview panoramic roof.

A Toyota spokesperson adds: “With its concept car-like design, seamless digital user experience, fully electrified powertrain range and nimble driving dynamics, the new Toyota C-HR has the qualities to maintain its position as an iconic model, attracting new customers and strengthening the Toyota brand in Europe.”
