Here’s a first look at the second generation Skoda Kodiaq, with the SUV poised to get plug-in hybrid power for the first time.
The Kodiaq is an SUV that ticks plenty of boxes for lease customers, boasting a winning mix of being both affordable while also coming with the option of seven seats.
As a family load-lugger, the Kodiaq competes with lease cars like the Kia Sorento, Peugeot 5008, and SEAT Tarraco.
And the Kodiaq is about to get even more appealing, because the next generation - seen here in disguised form - will add a frugal plug-in hybrid engine to the mix and features an overhauled cabin.
The plug-in hybrid engine - the 1.5 TSI iV - marries a 1.5 litre petrol engine with an electric motor to produce power of 204 hp. It’ll also have a range of up to 62 miles using electricity alone, which exceeds the 35-mile range offered by the PHEV Kia Sorento.
It supports 11 kW from your typical wallbox and also has 50 kW fast-charging capabilities.
Also new for the Skoda Kodiaq is the option of mild hybrid tech, which is handily bolted to the entry-level 1.5 litre petrol engine.
A 2.0 litre petrol engine is also in the mix, as well as a 2.0 litre diesel with two power outputs, and those larger engines also unlock the option of all-wheel drive.
Meanwhile there are significant changes to the exterior and interior.
The Kodiaq has grown by 6cm compared with the outgoing generation, which means more space in the cabin. There’s a ‘powerful’ new appearance, says Skoda, with squared-off wheel arches, larger wheels, and the introduction of LED Matrix headlights.
The gearshift lever is now located on the steering column, which is a Skoda first, and makes for an uncluttered centre console. There’s also a larger 12.9 inch infotainment touchscreen and an optional head-up display.
And, Skoda fans, worry not - because you still get an umbrella in the driver’s door.
A ‘Remote Parking Assist’ system will debut on the new Kodiaq, which allows you to park the big SUV from outside the car using an app. If an imminent prang is detected, the Kodiaq will put the brakes on automatically.
Klaus Zellmer, Chairman of the Board of Skoda Auto, says: “The Kodiaq has been an absolute success for Škoda ever since its launch in 2016, when it kickstarted our SUV campaign. With its powerful and crystalline design language, spacious interior and excellent value for money, it attracted many new customers and won renowned international awards. The second generation has all the prerequisites – including a plug-in hybrid version – to add another great chapter to this success story.”
While this new Kodiaq won’t arrive until next year, you can lease the current Skoda Kodiaq SUV with Select Car Leasing from £414 per month*.
