Select backs life-changing baby care charity

The incredible New Life charity is helping to save the lives of countless special care babies across the UK - and Select Car Leasing is proud to be supporting it.

On 19th July, New Life will be holding a charity golf day at Calcot Park Golf Club near Reading, Berkshire, with Select Car Leasing as the main sponsors.

Staff from Select’s Reading HQ will be taking part, alongside celebs including darts champ Luke Humphries and former Wimbledon goalkeeper Dave Beasant.

All proceeds from the event will be used by New Life to fund the purchase of equipment to be donated to NHS hospitals and their Special Care Baby Units (SCBU).

New Life began in 1995 when the charity’s creator and Chief Exec Trevor Goodall tragically lost his twin sons Joshua and Samuel shortly after their birth.

Determined to form a lasting legacy for his boys, Trevor, 61, set about fundraising, educating and raising awareness in the name of babies born too sick or too soon.

Fast forward to 2024, and the results are simply staggering.

New Life has raised around £1.7m, all of it being used to buy incubators, ventilators, lights, express pumps - and anything else required by wards.

The charity has also purchased a number of critical care machines, at a cost of around £35,000 each, that cools-down the temperature of newborn infants that have suffered a bleed on the brain while increasing their chances of survival without brain damage. Sadly, not every NHS hospital has one.

Trevor, from Newbury, Berks, has donated equipment to around 40 hospitals across the UK, often buying equipment directly before donating it to wards.

Around £500,000 has been donated to the Great Western Hospital, Swindon, while a further £250,000 has gone to the Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading.

Crucially, and rather heroically, Trevor estimates that New Life has helped to save almost 30 babies from suffering cerebral palsy at the Royal Berkshire Hospital alone thanks to one of the cooling machines it funded.

He explains: “It’s an incredible piece of equipment that helps to care for babies born with a brain bleed. It cools the child, slows everything down, and after a number of days, the baby is warmed. Something like 95% of babies enjoy a full recovery.

“In those circumstances, every second counts. And if a baby can be placed on a critical care machine at a local hospital, rather than having to travel 30 miles to a different hospital, they’ve got a much greater chance of survival. I’m really proud that we’ve been able to do this. It’s a fantastic feeling to know that we’re making a difference."

Besides the regular golf events, supporters of New Life are also constantly raising money through other charitable endeavours. There are cricket matches, D-Day cycling tours, Three Peaks hiking challenges, and even a trek up Kilimanjaro.

Trevor says that whenever he can, he’ll take those who’ve raised funds directly to the hospital ward to see the piece of equipment they’ve helped to purchase.

He adds: “I want them to see the equipment in action, to see the amazing work they’ve done. If people give to the charity, I want people to see exactly where the money is going.”

And has New Life noticed an increase in the number of NHS trusts coming to the charity asking for support?

Trevor reveals: “In a nutshell, yes, and they’ve often got no-one else to ask despite the incredible work they do.

“A hospital might agree to the purchase of a piece of equipment but it then goes on a waiting list where it takes six months, a year, 18 months to arrive. But that’s not very good when you need a piece of equipment right now, this week. We can speed up the process and make the job easier for nurses.”

Meanwhile Trevor and New Life have thanked Select Car Leasing for its sponsorship.

Trevor adds: “We’re a Berkshire-based charity and it’s great to have a local company on board like Select. We really appreciate the support.”

Mark Tongue, Joint CEO and founder of Select Car Leasing, applauded New Life for its ‘truly incredible’ work.

He said: “Everyone at Select is proud to be supporting New Life and we’re thrilled to be the main sponsor of the Charity Golf Day at Calcot Park. What Trevor and the New Life team have achieved is truly incredible and we applaud the charity for its ongoing support of the NHS. To have helped so many babies born too sick or too soon, both here in Berkshire and across the UK, means New Life is changing countless lives for the better.”

I could not recommend Select enough and the amazing service I had from my consultant Shane Newton. Shane regularly updated me on progress of my new vehicle, and was always so helpful in answering any queries I had regarding my order throughout the whole process - no question was silly - he always responded promptly whether that be through email or phone call. I just received my new vehicle last week, and Shane was in contact right away to ensure the handover was seamless and that I was happy with my new vehicle! Needless to say I was very happy with the earlier than anticipated delivery - Christmas has came early! This is my second vehicle with Select and yet another excellent service. I could not fault anything and want to thank Shane once again for all of his help!
