- Facelifted MG HS revealed at Goodwood Festival of Speed.
- Gets a distinctive new front grille and refreshed cabin.
- New MG HS is longer, wider and more spacious than before.
- Priced from £24,995.
MG has handed a major update to its popular HS - with the overhauled SUV arriving with a brand new face and more interior space.
The HS is MG’s largest SUV, sitting ahead of the more compact ZS, and it’s an affordable leasing rival to the likes of the Nissan Qashqai and Kia Sportage.
As before, the MG HS is available with either a traditional petrol engine or plug-in hybrid powertrain.
What’s new is that the HS has gained a more ‘sophisticated’ exterior and a longer wheelbase for a more spacious cabin.
The front face borrows its styling from the recently overhauled MG3 Hybrid, with slimmer headlights and a central black panel. It’s 14mm wider and 45mm longer than before, but it’s also 30mm lower, which creates a sleeker profile.
Boot capacity has increased by 44 litres to a maximum of 507 litres.
The entry-level engine is a 1.5-litre petrol with power of 169 PS and 275 Nm of torque which can get you from 0-62 mph in around 9.4 seconds, which isn’t too shabby.
The punchier plug-in hybrid option combines a 1.5-litre petrol engine with a 24.7 kW battery to create enough oomph to propel the HS from 0-62 mph in just 6.8 seconds, which is rapid.
Meanwhile the electric range of the PHEV HS has increased from 32 miles to a whopping 75 miles, which puts it straight to the top of the class when it comes to bang for your buck. For comparison purposes, the plug-in hybrid Kia Sportage has a lesser electric range of around 40 miles. MG also points out that company car drivers will enjoy a low 5% Benefit-in-Kind (BiK) rate with the plug-in HS, potentially saving you a heap of dosh.
Inside the cabin, the HS is still really well equipped as standard. There are two trims - SE and range-topping Trophy.
Standard-fit equipment at the SE grade includes twin 12.3 inch displays, a fully-connected infotainment system with sat nav, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and access to Amazon Music, rear parking sensors, a rear parking camera, and keyless entry.
Trophy models get larger 19-inch alloys, a 360-degree surround camera, wireless phone charging, a power tailgate, an uprated sound system, and Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality on PHEV models as standard.
There’s a full suite of driver assistance and safety tech fitted as standard no matter which variant you choose to lease. That includes an active emergency braking system, lane keep assist, and rear cross traffic alert. Choose a HS with a DCT automatic gearbox and you’ll also enjoy adaptive cruise control and traffic jam assist.
The petrol variant will be available to order imminently while the plug-in hybrid MG HS should be up for grabs by the end of September.
