New Octa is most powerful Land Rover Defender ever

  • New Land Rover Defender Octa revealed with £145,300 price tag.
  • Most powerful Defender ever at 635 PS.
  • Intelligent suspension with ‘6D’ dynamics.
  • Raised ride height means it wades deeper than any other Defender.

This is the new Octa - and it’s the most powerful and most capable Land Rover Defender ever built.

With a minimum £145,300 price tag, it ain’t cheap.

But with Land Rover boasting of the Octa’s ‘unmatched breadth of capability and performance both on and off‑road’, it’ll be the one of the year’s most lusted-after SUVs.

The Octa is a four-door ‘110’ model, which sits between the shorter ‘90’ and the long wheelbase ‘130’.

Besides that, though, it’s unlike pretty much any other Defender going.

A 4.4‑litre Twin Turbo mild‑hybrid V8 engine chucks out power of 635 PS and up to 750 Nm of torque. It means the Octa can accelerate from 0-62 mph in 4.0 seconds, which is almost supercar quick.

The Octa boasts a raised ride height and wider stance compared with other Defenders, with flared wheel arches and redesigned front bumpers giving it steeper approach and departure angles. It’ll wade through a depth of up to one metre which is, again, better than any other Defender.

A hydraulically‑interlinked ‘6D Dynamics’ suspension set-up ‘virtually eliminates pitch and body roll on‑road’, says Land Rover, and means the Octa is designed to be as fun to drive on the racetrack as it is on a mud-strewn mountain.

Punch the ‘Octa Mode’ button and you’ll also get off-road launch control and a unique ABS calibration which will have you accelerating through gravel hairpins with minimum fuss.

Jamal Hameedi, Director of SVO and Jaguar Land Rover, says: “Our high‑performance experts have achieved the impossible with Defender Octa, working tirelessly over the past three years to create the most capable Defender ever made – regardless of which surface it is enjoyed on. They have re‑engineered components throughout the vehicle to ensure Defender Octa is the perfect companion for epic adventures anywhere on the planet.”

And you can have those adrenaline-inducing adventures in utmost comfort.

Standard versions of the Octa feature a Burnt Sienna and Ebony interior, performance seats, as well as something called ‘Body and Soul’ audio tech. It basically allows the driver and front passenger to ‘feel’ the music as well as just hearing it while six ‘wellness programmes’ are also available.

There’s an uber-opulent Land Rover Defender Octa ‘Edition One’ model, too, which will cost from £160,800. At this level you can expect Faroe Green paint, a Khaki and Ebony interior, carbon fibre flourishes, and 20-inch forged alloys.

That noise you can hear is the sound of a stampede of Premier League footballers trying to get their mitts on one…

The biggest rival to the Land Rover Defender Octa will be the Mercedes-AMG G63.
