- New Ariel Nomad 2 off-road sports car revealed
- Uses tuned Ford Focus ST engine to produce 305 bhp
- Guaranteed to put a smile on your face
- Ariel Nomad 2 prices start at £67,992
What do you get if you take the 2.3-litre engine from the Ford Focus ST and whack it in a lightweight dune buggy?
You get this - the updated Ariel Nomad 2, described as the ‘ultimate go-anywhere sports car’ and which can accelerate from 0-60 mph in just 3.4 seconds, presumably up the side of a mountain.
The original Ariel Nomad was launched in 2015 as an all-terrain weapon and a big, ‘mucky brother’ to the track-honed Ariel Atom. At the time, the Nomad borrowed an engine from Honda that had 235 bhp and 300 Nm of torque.
But now Ariel - a British firm headquartered in Somerset - has upped the ante with the Nomad 2.
There’s a complete redesign when it comes to the styling while a larger diameter tube chassis increases torsional stiffness by more than 60% for sharper handling.
The tuned and remapped Ford ST 2.3L turbo engine produces power of up to 305 bhp and 518 Nm torque and gives you a top speed of 134 mph.
There’s also a larger cooling, fuel, and brake system with adjustable ABS and a raised aerodynamic ram-air intake.
Henry Siebert-Saunders, Ariel MD, says: “The all-new Nomad 2 is the sum of our 25 years of automotive experience, a decade of Nomad feedback and the latest learning from Atom 4. Pouring all this knowledge into Nomad 2 means it is faster and more capable than ever. The Nomad 2 really is the ultimate way to go-anywhere, on road or off it, fast!”
The Nomad 2 has also been tested to the limit… and we bet the pilots had a right laugh doing it!
Simon Saunders, Ariel Director, explains: “Making lightweight cars handle compliantly and comfortably on the road is an artform as suspension loads and forces are so low. Making the same car capable of reliably and repeatedly jumping the crest of an off-road hill at more than 100 mph takes this to another level. If you then add in loose surfaces, mud, water, and perhaps some ice, you’ll appreciate the extremes that we have dealt with. It’s a car that can be driven to the shops, and then around a WRC rally stage. But most importantly, whatever the journey, our guiding principle is that it will put a smile on your face.”
The Ariel Nomad 2 is priced from £67,992.
