Here’s the all-electric new Polestar 4 - and it’ll be the fastest vehicle the firm has ever produced when it arrives next year.
There’s a lot going on at Polestar right now.
The brand - founded by Volvo and China’s Geely - is planning to launch the Polestar 3 SUV later this year. We had a sneak peak of the 3 back in February.
And now Polestar has thrown the sheets off its incoming 4 - an SUV coupe that’ll be packing some serious levels of performance.
Polestar says the svelte, low-slung 4 is the ‘fastest Polestar production car to date’.
Perhaps confusingly, it’ll be positioned between the Polestar 2 fastback and the Polestar 3 in terms of its size and its price tag.
The headline figures make for some eye-catching reading.
There will be single and dual-motor versions of the Polestar 4, with power of up to 552 PS and 686 Nm of torque, courtesy of a whopping-great 102 kWh battery.
That’s enough to catapult the Polestar 4 from 0-62 mph in just 3.8 seconds, which comes close to matching the pace of the range-topping Tesla Model Y Performance.
Single-motor versions of the Polestar 4 are rear-wheel drive. And the Long range Single motor Polestar 4 has a target range of up to 372 miles between charges.
Polestar promises rapid charging speeds of up to 200 kW, which will take the battery from 10-80% in just 28 minutes. And that’s for all versions of the Polestar 4, not just the long range cars.
Bi-directional charging will be par for the course, with vehicle-to-load (V2L) capability at launch, too. For an explanation about what that all means, check out this piece on the electric Volvo EX90 SUV and it’s bi-directional abilities.
A heat pump is fitted as standard, which harnesses ‘wasted heat’ from the battery and electric motor to warm the cabin and optimise the range between charges.
Style wise, it’s very much bang on the Polestar money, with a minimalist exterior and interior and a cabin that wears its eco credentials on its sleeve. You can choose a knit textile which consists of 100% recycled PET (Polyethylene terephthalate) plastic and even the carpets are made from material like reclaimed fishing nets.
Another nice touch is the optional, full-length glass roof, which has ‘electrochromic’ capabilities, allowing you to change the glass from opaque to transparent at the touch of a button.
Thomas Ingenlath, Polestar CEO, says:
“With Polestar 4 we have taken a fundamental new approach to SUV coupé design. Rather than simply modifying an existing SUV, giving it a faster roofline and as a result, compromising elements like rear headroom and comfort, we have designed Polestar 4 from the ground up as a new breed of SUV coupé that celebrates rear occupant comfort and experience.”
