- Nissan unveils trio of new models
- Fresh Micra EV, third-gen Leaf, all-electric Juke
- New Micra shares EV platform with Renault 5 E-Tech
- Leaf SUV to be built in Sunderland
You can’t keep a good supermini down - which is why the Nissan Micra is braced for a fully-electric reboot, two years after being discontinued.
Japanese manufacturer Nissan has been outlining some big plans for the next couple of years, revealing a trio of new models.
An all-new Micra EV will arrive later this year with the curvy, frog-eyed styling harking back to the one we remember fondly from the 1990s.
The Nissan Leaf (above) is also being completely reinvented, with the incoming third-generation model now a family-sized SUV-hatchback crossover.
The new Leaf will also be produced right here in Blighty, with the eye-catching EV rolling off the factory floor in Sunderland later this year.
The Nissan Juke is also going down the fully-electric road.
So, what do we know so far?
Starting with the Micra, the re-born hatch will sit on the same ‘AmpR Small’ electric platform as the Renault 5 E-Tech, with Renault and Nissan having long been allies.
Like the little Renault, the Micra will offer a choice of two battery sizes - 40 kWh or 52 kWh - with the bigger of those units providing a range of up to 248 miles between charges.
While the Renault 5 features squared-off headlights and sharper lines, the Micra adopts a softer and more wide-eyed approach.
The Micra will be built at the Ampere ElectriCity plant in Douai, France.
The Nissan Leaf, meanwhile, has thoroughly grown up. Having helped to pioneer the electric movement on its launch in 2010, the Leaf now shares more in common with the electric Nissan Ariya SUV than any hatchback.
There’s no word just yet on battery size, but Nissan says the Leaf will ‘deliver significant range’ while also boasting a panoramic ‘moonroof’ and large 19-inch alloys.
A third-generation Nissan Juke will also make its way to the UK in 2026 - this time coming exclusively with a fully-electric powertrain. That’s a big deal, with the Juke being the 4th best-selling car in the UK last year.
The Nissan Qashqai (above, and Britain’s 3rd best-selling car in 2024) is also ripe for a refresh. Nissan is promising an updated version of its unique ‘e-POWER’ engine, offering ‘more refinement and efficiency’.
That e-POWER unit is unusual in that it uses a petrol engine and lithium ion battery to power an electric motor. The electric motor alone drives the wheels, rather than the combustion engine, giving you the feel of driving a full EV without the need to worry about range.
Nissan’s Leon Dorssers, Regional Senior Vice President, Sales & Marketing, said: “The renewal of Nissan’s European line-up is the realisation of our bold plan to electrify our range in Europe. All the new models will share common Nissan DNA: striking design, technical innovation and intuitive technology – a combination of qualities which we are confident will attract new buyers to Nissan, as well as continuing to appeal to existing customers who already love how Nissan vehicles enrich their daily lives.”
