- Audi A5 gains plug-in hybrid powertrain
- e-Hybrid available with A5 Saloon and A5 Avant estate
- EV range of up to 67 miles beats BMW 3 Series
- Priced from £48,950 and available May
An Audi A5 lease just got that bit more tempting - as it’ll soon be available with a plug-in hybrid powertrain with a 67-mile EV range.
The all-new Audi A5 arrived in the middle of last year as a revamped replacement for the Audi A4 as we know and love it.
Up until now, both the A5 Saloon and A5 Avant estate have been available with traditional petrol and diesel engines (the diesel gets mild-hybrid tech bolted on).
But now Audi is expanding the entire A5 range to include new ‘e-Hybrid’ PHEV models which should prove to be a bit of a game changer.
All get Audi’s infamous ‘quattro’ all-wheel drive system.
And all are powered by a 2.0-litre petrol engine that works in conjunction with an electric motor and 25.9 kWh battery to produce a combined 299 PS and 450 Nm of torque.
Performance is brisk, with 0-62 mph going by in just 5.9 seconds and the speed topping out at 155 mph. The battery is quick to recharge, with 0-100% energy replenishment taking 2.5 hours.
Crucially, that 67-mile electric range figure also trumps the PHEV BMW 3 Series ‘330e’, which can journey around 61 miles using battery power alone.
You can enjoy the e-Hybrid powertrain across all of the available Audi A5 trims - Technik, Sport, S Line, Edition 1 - and the PHEV models come as standard with three-zone automatic air conditioning, auxiliary air conditioning, and 18-inch wheels.
You will, though, have to compromise slightly on boot space with the PHEVs compared with the traditionally fuelled-models.
The boot capacity in the A5 e-Hybrid Saloon is 331 litres (down from 445 litres) while the Avant estate gets 361 litres (down from 476 litres).
Besides the BMW 3 Series plug-in hybrid, you might also want to look at the VW Passat (an estate only) or the Volvo V60 (another estate) with the latter having been given a recent stay of execution by its Scandinavian manufacturer.
