- New rear-wheel drive MGS5 EV revealed
- Big brother to the multi award-winning MG4
- Not to be confused with the outgoing MG5 estate
- Range of up to 298 miles between charges
- Priced from £28,495
Take a look at MG’s ‘most compelling and complete EV so far’ - the soon-to-arrive MGS5 EV.
The first thing to say here is that you shouldn’t confuse this new MGS5 with the somewhat fugly MG5 Estate, with the latter going the way of the dodo having been discontinued last year.
Instead the MGS5 is being billed as the big brother to the MG4 EV, a car that has conquered both critics and customers alike since its launch in 2022.
And with MG boasting how the MGS5 is its ‘most compelling and complete EV so far’, you can be forgiven for getting a little bit excited.
In terms of its size, the MGS5 is built on the same platform as the MG4 and measures 4,476mm in length - slightly longer than the MG ZS EV SUV and putting it in the same sphere as rivals like the Kia EV3, Skoda Elroq and Renault Scenic E-Tech.
Prices for the MGS5, however, begin at £28,495 - which undercuts that trio of alternatives by a decent distance.
You’ll be able to lease the MGS5 in one of three guises: SE Standard Range, SE Long Range, and Trophy Long Range.
The SE Standard Range model is equipped with a 49 kWh battery which unlocks a range of around 211 miles between charges.
The swankier SE Long Range and Trophy Long Range variants, meanwhile, get a larger 64 kWh battery and a range of either 298 miles (SE Long Range) or 288 miles (Trophy Long Range).
Maximum DC charging is 120 kW for the 49 kWh battery and 139 kW for the Long Range battery - all of which equates to a 10 to 80% rapid charge in less than half an hour.
The bigger of those two batteries also translates to some decent performance, with 231 PS and 350 Nm of torque allowing the MGS5 EV to accelerate from 0-62 mph in 6.3 seconds. In years not that long ago, that’d be considered hot hatch-quick. The fact that the MGS5 is rear-wheel drive (like the MG4) with a 47:53 weight distribution and rear Five-Link suspension, also tells you that it’s something of a driver’s car.
The base SE model comes with 17-inch alloys, a 12.8-inch infotainment screen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, rear parking sensors, and a reversing camera.
The summit Trophy Long Range model, meanwhile, adds extras like heated seats, wireless phone charging, and a smart electric tailgate.
All models get a full suite of driver assistance and safety tech, including lane keep assist, active emergency braking, and adaptive cruise control.
David Allison, Head of Product and Planning for MG Motor UK, said: “The rear wheel drive MGS5 EV features highly responsive and engaging driving characteristics, seamlessly combining sportiness with excellent range as well as rapid charging and a choice of two batteries. It is our most compelling and complete EV so far, performing strongly in every arena.”
