- New Smart #5 revealed
- Smart’s biggest car yet
- EV SUV gets 366-mile range
- Off-road ‘Summit Edition’ variants
- Available to lease later this year
Say hello to the new #5 - Smart’s biggest car yet and an electric SUV that could take the fight to the Tesla Model Y.
When the #5 arrives late 2025 or early 2026, it’ll be the third all-electric model from the manufacturer to be introduced in the last three years.
It’ll sit above the existing #1 and #3 in Smart’s range.
And with an anticipated range of up to 366 miles between charges, the Smart #5 will compete with a host of heavyweight rivals, including the all-conquering Tesla Model Y and the Audi Q4 e-tron, as well as the Peugeot E-3008.
Entry-level ‘Pro’ models will be equipped with a 76 kWh battery while cars from the ‘Pro+’ trim and above get a larger 100 kWh unit, the latter of which unlocks a range of up to 366 miles between charges. Those base models also boast a panoramic ‘halo’ roof, among other creature comforts.
Smart’s high-tech 800-volt EV platform also means the #5 will be quick to charge, with super-rapid 400 kW DC charging enabling a 10-80% refresh in just 18 minutes.
The Smart #5 should also be capable of journeying where other electric SUVs can’t venture.
The ‘Pulse’ variants enjoy a dual-motor all-wheel drive setup (as well as an extra-wide dual OLED central display and an energy-efficient heat pump). Meanwhile there’s also a rough ‘n’ tough, all-wheel drive ‘Summit Edition’ variant that’ll come with an electric trailer hitch, roof platform and side ladder.
Both the ‘Pulse’ and ‘Summit Edition’ Smart #5 models feature five off-road driving modes (Adaptive, Sand, Snow, Mud, and Rock) while also being rapid off the mark - accelerating from 0-62 mph in just 4.9 seconds. That’s Porsche Macan Electric territory.
Smart tells us that the #5 has been designed with the ethos ‘Love, Pure, Unexpected’ in mind, with the SUV boasting a ‘sleek and dynamic silhouette’.
There are oblong front and rear headlights, dual-coloured mirrors, and line-specific features such as floating wheel caps, with the central smart logo remaining upright while driving.
Inside, premium touches like oak wood trim, high-quality leather upholstery and curved design elements elevate the #5 into the ‘premium’ EV category.
A huge 25.6-inch Augmented Reality (AR) head-up display and 10.25-inch Full HD digital instrument cluster will be up for grabs, as will two 13-inch centre and passenger screens.
The Smart #5 can also be equipped with a Sennheiser Signature Sound System, featuring 20 high-performance speakers.
On the practicality front, you get 34 stowage compartments, a 72-litre front trunk, 1,530 litres of rear cargo room. The seats fold flat to create a resting or sleeping area.
You can expect a full suite of driver assistance and safety tech, including Pilot Assist (which helps you stay in your lane and at a safe distance from the car in front) and adaptive cruise control.
It’s worth remembering that Smart as we now know it was reborn in 2020 thanks to an alliance between Mercedes-Benz and Chinese giants Geely, who look after brands like Volvo, Polestar and Lotus. So, there’s plenty of expertise behind Smart to make cars like the #5 a rip-roaring success.
