Talk about a comeback - this is the first MG roadster for a decade.
And the all-electric MG Cyberster marks the start of a ‘bold and compelling new chapter’ for MG, according to the brand.
The Cyberster has finally made its debut at the Auto Shanghai 2023 motor show almost two years after it was first unveiled as a concept.
It’s a triumphant return to form for MG, an iconic British marque long synonymous with two-seat sports cars and which is now under the ownership of China’s SAIC Motor.
In fact, you have to go all the way back to 2011 to find the last MG roadster - the unloved MG TF.
For now, precise details about the MG Cyberster’s powertrain are few and far between - with some in the know suspecting it’ll be packing as much as 544 PS in dual-motor form.
MG says the Cyberster pays homage to ‘much-admired roadsters from MG’s rich heritage’ and comes complete with a ‘distinctive long bonnet, low nose and curvaceous surfaces’, while also introducing striking new features such as its distinctive scissor doors and an angular, aggressive rear end.
Carl Gotham, Advanced Design Director of the company’s Marylebone design studio in London, said: “Our intention was to create a completely new roadster ready for a new generation of sportscar drivers and which opens a bold and compelling new chapter for MG. The focus for Cyberster was to create a design that was respectful of the brand’s illustrious past and to bring back that sporting bloodline, while also being absolutely clear that it should be modern and forward-facing like the MG of today, completely in-tune with the rapid transition to electric vehicles.”
Cyberster is expected to arrive for lease in the summer of 2024.
And if it’s anything like as successful as the multi award-winning MG4 EV, we’re all in for a treat.
