Rebellious new CUPRA Terramar - everything you need to know

  • CUPRA unveils the Terramar
  • Medium-sized SUV will be available to order later this year
  • Sporty alternative to Kia Sportage, VW Tiguan and Ford Kuga
  • Available as powerful plug-in hybrid

CUPRA has thrown the sheets off its incoming new Terramar SUV.

The sporty SUV will arrive later this year with a choice of different powertrains, including a powerful plug-in hybrid that can travel up to 70 miles using electricity alone.

The Terramar will ultimately replace the outgoing CUPRA Ateca in the Spanish firm’s line-up and slots-in alongside the slightly smaller Formentor SUV-coupe.

Here’s everything we know so far:

Size and looks

The CUPRA Terramar will join the ranks of other family-sized SUVs, including the likes of the Volkswagen Tiguan, Kia Sportage, Ford Kuga and Nissan Qashqai.

It’s 4,519mm long, 1,584mm tall and 1,863mm wide - which makes it slightly shorter but also slightly wider than the Tiguan.

And where the Terramar stands out from many competitors is in its razor-sharp, aggressive styling and the amount of power available.

There’s a snarling, performance-oriented functional lower mouth - like you get with the recently-updated CUPRA Leon and CUPRA Formentor - and sweeping lines that wouldn’t look out of place on a fully-fledged sports car.

It’s also relatively wide and low-slung, with CUPRA describing its road presence as ‘rebellious’ and ‘defiant’.

While CUPRA hasn’t yet revealed details concerning boot space and rear room, the Terramar is closely-related to the VW Tiguan (with CUPRA part of the Volkswagen Group of manufacturers) so we anticipate plenty of luggage space, up to 652 litres on some models.

Powertrains

There should be a Terramar to suit lots of different lease customers, with traditional petrol engines, mild hybrids and an ‘e-HYBRID’ plug-in hybrid.

The ‘eTSI’ mild hybrids marry a 1.5-litre petrol engine with 48V tech and a 7-speed DSG transmission to produce power of 150 PS. It’s a mild-hybrid system that also allows for electric coasting over short distances, which is a bonus.

The regular TSI petrol engine is a 2.0-litre unit and comes with ‘4Drive’ all-wheel drive as standard. There’s power of 204 PS from the get-go while range-topping ‘VZ’ variants push that grunt up to 265 PS. VZ stands for ‘Veloz’ in Spanish, in case you were wondering.

The PHEV Terramar is eye-catching indeed, coming with very decent power of up to 272 PS - which is the same as you get with the plug-in hybrid Volkswagen Golf GTE hot hatch.

The oomph comes courtesy of a 1.5 TSI engine linked to an electric motor and 19.7kWh battery. It means the plug-in Terramar is capable of travelling up to 70 miles using electricity alone while it’s also compatible with rapid 50 kW DC charging while on the road.

Cabin and tech

The CUPRA Terramar’s interior is a sustainable one, with the central areas of the bucket seats wrapped in ‘Seaqual’ recyclable textile, the Dinamica used featuring at least 73% recycled textile, or using leather that uses a plant-based tanning process.

There’s a 12.9-inch infotainment system with a retro-illuminated slider and a 10.25-inch digital cockpit. Meanwhile CUPRA’s partnership with audi experts Sennheiser means you can also enjoy a premium 12-speaker sound system.

A head-up display will be available, as will a full-suite of semi-autonomous driving technology, including CUPRA’s ‘Travel Assist’ system which features adaptive cruise control, lane keeping, and lane change assist.

Interior ambient lighting includes backlit door panels front and rear.

Trim levels

The ‘VZ’ grade Terramar is the top rung and gets the most powerful powertrains as well as 20-inch copper-coloured wheels, a ‘Sport’ Dynamic Chassis Control (DCC) system, and a moody ‘High Canyon’ interior.

There will also be a limited edition ‘America’s Cup’ model, inspired by the famous sailing competition of the same name.

Those America’s Cup variants will feature, among other things, a matt grey paint job and unique black alloy wheels and it’ll be available exclusively with the VZ powertrain options - ie, the 272 PS eHybrid or the 265 PS 2.0 TSI petrol.

CUPRA says deliveries of the Terramar will start during the last quarter of this year.
