- CUPRA Born VZ now available to lease
- Most powerful Born in the CUPRA line-up with 326 PS
- Sibling car to the incoming VW ID.3 GTX
- Costs from £44,625 to buy outright
The hottest of all CUPRA Borns - the new VZ model - is now available to lease. And here’s everything you need to know.
Up until now, the fully-electric CUPRA Born was packing a maximum 230 PS, when you chose the ‘V3’ variant with ‘e-Boost’.
That was already enough to see the Born accelerating from 0-62 mph in 6.6 seconds - a respectable time that even beats the sprightly Ford Puma ST.
Now, though, there’s a new top dog.
The VZ - first teased in February and with the ‘VZ’ bit standing for ‘Veloz’, aka ‘fast’ in Spanish - features a 79 kWh battery which is larger than elsewhere in the Born line-up.
It means you get 326 PS and 545 Nm of torque - which CUPRA says is 75% more than any other Born version.
And you can now whizz from 0-62 mph in 5.6 seconds, which is quicker than any of the electric MINI Cooper hatchbacks or the battery-powered Abarth 500e. It isn’t, though, faster than uber-rapid electric hot hatches like the MG4 XPower or the Smart #1 in Brabus trim.
The top speed has increased and is now limited to 124 mph. There’s also improved chassis dynamics thanks to DCC Sport suspension.
In spite of the power boost, the CUPRA Born VZ can still go the distance, with a range between charges of up to 372 miles. Rapid 185 kW DC fast-charging point can replenish the energy in the battery from 10% to 80% taking just 26 minutes.
Besides the extra oomph, the Born VZ model also boasts more in the way of kit.
The cabin gets grey CUP bucket seats as standard, as well as a premium Sennheiser sound system, keyless entry, and 20-inch ‘Thunderstorm’ alloy wheels.
Marcus Gossen, Director of SEAT and CUPRA UK, said: “The CUPRA Born is an incredibly popular model, and we’re thrilled with the impact it has made as our first all-electric offering. At CUPRA, we continuously strive to exceed expectations, and the Born VZ does exactly that. More power, enhanced refinement, and builds upon the strengths of an already exceptional car.”
There’s another electric hot hatch, closely related to the CUPRA Born, that we’ll be keeping an eye on.
That’s the Volkswagen ID.3 GTX (above), revealed earlier this year and due to launch later this summer. CUPRA falls under the Volkswagen Group umbrella and so the Born VZ and the VW ID.3 GTX share precisely the same 326 PS powertrain.
