Next-gen Audi A6 Avant revealed

  • All-new Audi A6 Avant estate revealed
  • Traditional petrol and diesel engines
  • Sits alongside electric Audi A6 e-tron
  • New Audi A6 Saloon to follow
  • On sale from April 1 priced from £52,510

Audi is readying to launch a heavily-revised A6 Avant - and the business-class estate is more ‘dynamic’ than ever before.

The A6 Avant is an absolute stalwart of the Audi range, having been wafting families and execs around in style since the late Nineties.

And this all-new version - which goes on sale April 1 - dials everything up a notch compared with the outgoing model, being more spacious, better equipped, and more comfortable.

The car you’re looking at was initially slated to be called the ‘A7’, with Audi having outlined plans to give electric cars even numbers and traditionally-fuelled vehicles odd numbers. That scheme has, however, been scrapped.

So, the new Audi A6 models will simply sit alongside the fully-electric Audi A6 e-tron variants, which you can also lease with Select.

Audi A6 Avant Petrol and diesel engines

Let’s start with the engines. The new Audi A6 Avant will initially be offered with a choice of two; a 2.0-litre petrol or a 2.0-litre diesel, each developing 204 PS.

The petrol will take you from 0-62 mph in 8.3 seconds while the diesel is quicker, doing the same sprint in 7.0 seconds.

The TFSI petrol is described as the ‘entry-level’ and it’s only available with front-wheel drive (The diesel brings you ‘quattro’ all-wheel drive).

What’s new is that the turbocharger features ‘variable turbine geometry’ (VTG), which improves responsiveness and efficiency. A seven-speed ‘S tronic’ dual-clutch transmission is fitted as standard.

Unlike the petrol engine, the TDI diesel is supported by mild-hybrid tech consisting of a 48-volt battery, a belt alternator starter, and a new powertrain generator with integrated power electronics.

The powertrain generator allows for ‘partially electric driving’ at very slow speeds and also gives extra torque (up to 400 Nm combined). The 2.0 TDI is also fitted with a dual-clutch transmission.

Audi A6 Avant exterior

The new Audi A6 Avant has grown by 60 mm compared with the outgoing model, which makes for a sleeker exterior and a roomier cabin.

The front is characterized by a low-positioned Singleframe, which extends to the lower edge of the front apron. There are new air curtains positioned under the headlights which give the bumper ‘a powerful and sporty look’, Audi tells us. The blisters emerging from the shoulder surface at the front and rear wheels are ‘reminiscent’ of the original Audi Quattro while the rear, with its continuous light strip and large diffuser, ‘exudes prestige’.

Drivers can choose between 10 colours for the Audi A6, including the solid finish Arkona White. Glacier White, Mythos Black, Grenadine Red, Florett Silver, Firmament Blue, Ascari Blue, and Chronos Grey are available as metallic finishes, along with a new colour option called Midnight Green. The selection is rounded off with pearl effect Daytona Grey.

Audi A6 Avant interior

As we pointed out above the A6 Avant has grown overall - yet the boot space seems to have shrunk, with Audi quoting a max of 503 litres, while the A6 Avant you can lease right now has 565 litres of luggage space. An electric kick tailgate is, however, fitted as standard.

Audi’s standard-fit ‘MMI panoramic display’ comprises a 11.9-inch digital cockpit and a 14.5-inch touchscreen, while a 10.9-inch passenger screen is available as an option.

The infotainment system itself is an Android affair which allows you to connect to a host of apps and the AI-powered ChatGPT function.

The contoured lighting along the dashboard and in the doors accentuates the width of the interior, particularly in the dark, while a ‘dynamic interaction light’ is located below the windscreen and is made up of 84 LEDs which has a ‘welcome function’ or which will tell you when the vehicle is locked or unlocked.

Audi A6 Avant trim levels

There are three trim levels to choose from with your new Audi A6 Avant lease; Sport, S Line and Edition 1.

Entry-level Sport models feature 18-inch alloys, ‘Standard’ suspension (though adaptive air suspension is available as an option on all models), LED lights, twin leather heated front seats, wireless phone charging, surround view cameras, and safety tech like adaptive cruise control and Audi’s automated ‘Park Assist Plus’ feature.

S Line models add larger 19-inch rims, ‘Sport’ suspension with a 20mm lower ride height, S Line design cues on the exterior, privacy glass, ‘Sport’ seats in the front, stainless steel pedals and footrests, a ‘Sport’ leather steering wheel, and black cloth headlining.

The A6 Avant Edition 1, meanwhile, boasts 20-inch alloys, the ‘Black’ exterior package, dark chrome exhaust pipes, Dinamica and leather seats in the front, lane departure warning with emergency assist, and rear cross-traffic assist with rear turn assist.

Audi A6 Avant rival lease cars

As before, the BMW 5 Series Touring will pose stiff leasing competition to the new Audi A6 Avant, as will the Mercedes-Benz E-Class Estate. The Volvo V90 is another option, having been brought back to the UK by the Scandinavian firm last year following a brief axing. More affordable options include the Skoda Superb Estate and VW Passat.

What about the Audi S6 Avant and the Audi A6 Saloon?

Good question. The all-new Audi A6 Saloon will be coming down the road shortly, and we’ll bring you those details when they arrive.

There’s no news about the Audi S6 Avant just yet - while a plug-in hybrid Audi RS6 Avant is also just over the horizon. Watch this space.
