VW’s entry-level EV: World premiere!

  • Volkswagen unveils ID. Every1 concept
  • Previews firm’s 20,000 Euros (£16,792) electric hatch
  • Production ‘ID.1’ version set for launch 2027
  • 155-mile max range
  • VW Up! Name-checked as predecessor

BOOM - here it is, VW’s entry-level EV, revealed in full for the very first time.

This is the VW ID. Every1. It’s only a ‘show car’ for now but the production version is going to be a very big deal indeed.

Volkswagen is on a mission to build a premium electric hatchback for around 20,000 Euros - aka, around £16,792.

It’d make the ID.1 - as it’ll likely be known when the production version hits the market in 2027 - one of the most affordable EVs going, despite having that premium VW badge slapped on the front.

The ID.1 will sit at the foot of the VW range, behind the also-inbound ID.2 (revealed as the ID.2all concept) which has a slightly higher target price of 25,000 Euros.

So, what do we know about the ID.1 - a compact successor to the VW Up!?

Both the ID.1 and the ID.2 will be based on Volkswagen’s new modular electric drive platform: the ‘MEB with front-wheel drive’.

VW says the ID.1 is ‘sporty’ yet ‘versatile’ and should appeal to a host of customers, including those in the delivery business or who work for care services.

It certainly looks the part, with chunky front bumpers and a rear end that appears to ‘smile’ at you.

Volkswagen Head of Design Andreas Mindt, explains: “Our ambition was to create something bold yet accessible. The ID. Every1 has a self-assured appearance but remains likeable – thanks to details such as the dynamic front lights and the ‘smiling’ rear. These design elements make it more than just a car: they give it character and an identity that people can relate to.”

It’s a car with ‘affordable mobility for millions of people’ at its heart yet it’ll also be smart, arriving with a powerful new software architecture with over-the-air updates.

It won’t be particularly quick, with power of 95 PS and a top speed of around 81 mph, but you should enjoy a range of up to 155 miles between charges, which is more than a Dacia Spring but less than the Citroen e-C3.

With a length of 3,880 mm, the ID.1 is about 20 cm shorter than a VW Polo. It’s a four-seater only, but there’s a decent 305-litre boot.

So, will you want one when it does eventually arrive?
