- Electric Ariel E-Nomad is sibling to petrol Nomad 2
- Gets power of 281 bhp and 490 Nm of torque
- Ariel promises ‘seriously clean fun’
- It’s a concept with ‘production intent’
British firm Ariel has revealed a fully-electric version of its raucous Nomad off-roader in the form of the 281 bhp E-Nomad.
While most EVs are exactly known for being light, the E-Nomad weighs-in at just 896 kg, which means the rear-wheel drive dune buggy is capable of accelerating from 0-60 mph in just 3.4 seconds.
That’s the same sprint time as the traditionally-fuelled 305 bhp new Ariel Nomad 2, which borrows a petrol engine from the Ford Focus ST.
And while Somerset-based Ariel says the E-Nomad is a concept for now they’ll ‘monitor consumer reaction to inform its future plans’.
The battery-powered version of Ariel’s ‘ultimate go-anywhere sportscar’ gets a range of up to 150 miles between charges courtesy of its 41 kWh powertrain. There’s a ton of torque on tap at 490 Nm.
And unlike other EVs, the E-Nomad is capable of rock crawling and conquering rally stages. You also get a limited slip differential for optimum grip when you need it most.
The lightweight, aerodynamic bodywork is made from natural flax fibres (derived from the flax plant), which means it’s strong and stiff and can also be recycled with ease.
Simon Saunders, Ariel Director, said: “While the E-Nomad is a concept, it does show production intent for the vehicle and hints at just a small part of Ariel’s future. Once it has been through our usual, gruelling testing regime we could opt to add E-Nomad alongside its ICE Nomad 2 sibling, so we’ll take great interest in customer feedback on the concept car.”
We’ve no idea how much the Ariel E-Nomad might cost just yet but the petrol-engined Nomad 2 begins at £67,992, so you can expect to pay a premium on that if it goes on sale.
