The ‘capable, classy, entertaining’ new Nissan X-Trail has won the overall ‘4x4 of the Year 2023’ award from the UK’s 4X4 Magazine.
The updated X-Trail was launched in September last year, with Nissan promising the ultimate all-rounder and a ‘vehicle for families to share adventures in’. You can read our exclusive review of it here.
And the X-Trail is clearly winning admirers, with 4X4 Magazine also handing it a second prize for ‘Best Medium SUV’ at their annual awards.
It’s an eye-catching accolade for the X-Trail, as there’s no shortage of options in the off-road market
It also means the X-Trail has beaten last year’s ‘4x4 of the Year 2022' winner, the classy Land Rover Defender, which is a remarkable triumph for Nissan.
Alan Kidd, Editor of 4X4 Magazine commented:
"You can get blasé about new vehicles when you're bombarded with them week in, week out. But the upside of that is that when something really knocks our socks off, we know it must be special. And that's exactly what the new X-Trail has done.
"It's capable, classy, entertaining and, with its seven-seat layout, hugely practical. Whether you want it for work or play, it's right there, right on the money. A good SUV is meant to be good at everything: the new X-Trail is great at everything, and it's a great SUV.
"We love that Nissan hasn't abandoned off-roading, too. For all the X-Trail's slick looks, classy cabin, and high-tech electrified powertrain, it's still capable of finding grip on rough ground and low-traction surfaces.”
One of the X-Trail’s party pieces is its option of an ‘e-POWER’ hybrid powertrain. It’s a self-charging hybrid system that uses a 1.5 litre petrol engine that acts as a generator to feed a 150kW front electric motor.
There’s power of 213 PS, fuel economy of around 45 mpg, and acceleration is rapid.
Meanwhile the X-Trail also boasts Nissan’s ‘e-4ORCE’ all-wheel drive system, which delivers ‘reassuring traction and strong acceleration in all conditions’, says Nissan.
In fact, the e-4ORCE’S rear torque response is ‘10,000 times faster than a mechanical 4WD system ensuring a smoother and more comfortable ride’, according to the Japanese firm.
A Nissan spokesperson adds:
“Engineers have carefully tuned e-4ORCE to optimise handling and stability across many driving scenarios, with the system managing power output and braking to each wheel individually. e-4ORCE enhances driver confidence by tracing the intended driving line over almost any road surface, while never needing to change driving style or input. It’s this exciting technology that has driven X-Trail into 4X4 Magazine’s top spot!”
Besides its 4x4 prowess, the X-Trail boasts Nissan’s ‘ProPILOT assist’ tech, making it safe on the road, too.
The ProPilot Assist package includes adaptive cruise control, speed monitoring on curves, blind-spot radars and ‘Moving Object Detection’ alert, which will automatically apply the brakes to stop the car if a moving object is detected.
