The new Amarok is getting closer, with a reveal later in 2022, but Volkswagen keeps teasing us with ever more detailed images.
Intended to highlight its all-weather credentials, the latest rendering reveals more of the details of the new design truck than we’ve seen before.
Using the same platform as the next-generation Ford Ranger, and being built in Ford’s factory in South Africa, the new Amarok has grown up a little from the previous model. Measuring 10cm longer and 4cm wider than the previous Amarok, the new model, the changes to the exterior are clear.
Extensive plastic cladding appears over the wheel arches, adding visual strength as well as offering protection to the paintwork underneath. The cladding extends between the wheel arches, sitting above a side step. Some cunningly placed snow hides the rear light lenses, but expect LED rear lights in a vertical cluster.
The bigger revelation is a sliver of the new pickup’s interior. Differing significantly from its Ford Ranger sibling, there appears to be a single dashboard topper running the width of the vehicle, above a version of Volkswagen’s Digital Cockpit. This all-digital instrument panel allows for various personalisation options and can be used to display anything from music track titles to a Google Earth-esque digital map for navigation.
A centrally mounted digital touchscreen will handle all of the infotainment systems, and is likely to be used for other vehicle controls, such as heating and ventilation.

“You can see that in the interior of the pick-up too. The uncluttered architecture, the elements designed in a machine-like fashion, the clear, taut surfaces and a particularly high-quality cockpit raise the Volkswagen DNA to a new level and emphasise the Amarok’s right to claim premium vehicle status.”
“In terms of drive system we are continuing to use highly efficient TDI diesel engines for the new Amarok,"
says Lars Menge, Head of Product Marketing at Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles.
“And there will be a powerful V6 TDI available in the future too, plus further power units specific in each case to the market. In other words, depending on the market the Amarok will be moving forward efficiently and powerfully as a diesel or petrol vehicle.”
The new Volkswagen Amarok is expected to be revealed in full in the summer, with UK deliveries starting in 2023.
