Ahead of it arriving with customers in June, order books for the UK’s first full hybrid petrol-electric van, the new Toyota Corolla Commercial, are now open.
The new model extends the Toyota Professional light commercial vehicle range further, adding to the Proace and Proace City vans - both available as pure electric vehicles.
Hybrid Power
A petrol hybrid system powers the new Corolla Commercial. Under the bonnet is a 1.8-litre petrol engine with an electric motor paired to a small battery pack under the car. The combination allows the Corolla van to run on petrol power, pure electric power, or a combination of both. Computers do the hard work and figure out the most efficient way of using the power available, leaving the driver with nothing more to do than concentrate on the road.
Official economy figures have yet to be released, but Toyota expects the Corolla Commercial to return between 55.3 and 62,7mpg, with CO2 emissions of between 102 and 115g/km. Experience of the passenger car version suggests that real-world economy should fall in the mid-50 mpg range, depending on conditions and driving style.
Cargo Capacity and Payload
While Toyota is yet to finalise the cargo capacity, the Corolla Commercial is based on the Touring Sports version of the passenger car. The rear seats have been removed, a bulkhead put in place, and a flat load floor installed to create a spacious and easily accessible load area.
The estate car offers 1,591 litres of capacity and it would be reasonable to expect the Commercial version to exceed this, although not by much. The load area will measure 1,558mm long, 952mm wide and 682mm high. There’s no word on payload, but expect a towing limit of 750kg.
High Specification
There’s just one trim level available, but it’s well specified. Fitted as standard, you’ll find a full metal bulkhead, 8.0-inch infotainment screen, smartphone integration with Apple Car Play and Android Auto, reversing camera, automatic headlights, dual-zone air conditioning and heated, height-adjustable seats.
The van is also equipped with Toyota Safety Sense active safety and driver assistance systems, including adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist.
It’s a reminder of the van’s passenger car roots, which extends to the mechanicals; expect a more comfortable ride thanks to advanced multilink suspension.
Pricing and Availability
Leasing rates aren’t out yet, but the Toyota Corolla Commercial will be available with a list price of £22,134 plus VAT. As with every Toyota, it will come with the Toyota Relax warranty, which can provide warranty cover for up to 10 years - that should be enough to cover even the longest of lease agreements.
First customer deliveries are expected in June 2022.
