The Volkswagen ID. Buzz just got more intelligent - thanks to the introduction of new ‘Travel Assist’ and ‘Park Assist Plus’ technology.
Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past six months, you’ll know that the ID. Buzz is VW’s new, ultra-desirable, all-electric MPV that can also be leased as an ID. Buzz cargo van.
It’s already chock-a-block with features, including a range of up to 258 miles between charges and driver assistance and safety systems such as adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking, and self-parking capabilities.
Now, however, that list of goodies has been improved with the addition of ‘Travel Assist with swarm data’ and ‘Park Assist Plus with memory function’ - the latter of which means the electric bus learns individual parking manoeuvres and can then repeat them on its own.
Both systems are now available as optional extras.
With the motorway assisted lane changes, all you need to do is tap the turn signal and the ID. Buzz will do the rest.
The manoeuvres rely on something called the ‘adaptive lane guidance system’, and a VW spokesperson explains:
“This system actively keeps the vehicle in the middle of its lane. Travel Assist adapts itself to the driver’s driving style and can also keep the vehicle further left or right in the lane instead of exactly in the centre.
“Travel Assist also comes with predictive cruise control and a cornering assist function. Here, the vehicle speed can be adapted to valid speed limits and the course of the road.”
The ID. Buzz also gathers anonymised ‘swarm’ data from other VW’s in the area, feeding extra input into the car’s driver assistance brain.
What can this swarm info tell you? Well, it might warn you of potential dangers when you’re negotiating an unlit, country lane with no road markings, or it might even give you road sign data.
The ‘Park Assist Plus with memory function’ allows the ID. Buzz to memorise up to five individual parking manoeuvres - such as you backing into your garage. All you do is park up, save the spot, and the ID. Buzz will take the reins next time around.
Ever driven past a parallel parking spot and thought, ‘Hmm, I’m not sure I’ll fit in there…’?
Worry not - because the ID. Buzz will automatically let you know if you’re about to attempt mission impossible, even when you’re driving past the spot at speeds of up to 25 mph.
The assistance system then takes over and parks the car for you.
If you’re wary about parking - particularly in busy cities - the system could be an absolute Godsend.
You can lease a Volkswagen ID. Buzz with Select from around £640 per month, or around £460 for the ID. Buzz Cargo Van.
