One in six Brit motorists admit they’re a ‘terrible driver’

  • One in six UK motorists admit they’re ‘bad drivers’
  • Poll of 2,000 Britons by Isuzu
  • Dated tech on older cars is an issue (so lease a new one with us!)
  • 4% confess they're a genuine 'danger' on the road

One in six Brit motorists admit they’re a ‘terrible driver’, according to a new survey.

Pick-up specialists Isuzu - purveyors of the popular Isuzu D-Max, below, and which you can lease with Select - polled 2,000 UK drivers to get a feel for road challenges and anxieties.

And the results are revealing.

A surprising 15% described themselves as ‘bad drivers’, with Isuzu saying the most self-confessed ‘terrible’ motorists are to be found in Cardiff (35%), London (33%) and Liverpool (31%). Shockingly, 4% admit they are actually a danger on the roads.

Too many cars on the road (36%), too small parking spaces (24%), being easily distracted (20%) and small roads (17%) are the main reasons for poor driving, along with getting bored behind the wheel (14%).

Interestingly - and this is something you can swerve when you lease a brand-new, modern vehicle with Select Car Leasing - some of the other big reasons for bad driving also included cars not having blind spot detection (13%) or attention monitoring sensors (12%).

Inevitably, sometimes bad driving also results in accidents.

More than half (54%) said they’d suffered a prang due to distractions, with 32% of those polled wishing for the latest advanced car features - which includes tech like adaptive cruise control and automatic emergency braking.

More than a third - 36% - said that a ‘larger car’ could make them feel safer when behind the wheel while a frustrated 6% said they simply ‘hate’ their vehicle.

George Wallis, Head of Marketing at Isuzu UK, said: “With over 50 million drivers in Great Britain, it is worrying to think that as many as 7.5 million consider themselves bad drivers. It’s clear from the research that UK motorists face many challenges on all journeys, from smaller roads, tight parking bays and even their own vehicle. With one in three saying that having a vehicle with all the mod cons like blind spot detection and attention monitoring sensors would help them to be a better driver.”

When it comes to road rage, more than half of the survey respondents (59%) revealed they’d been ‘shouted at or received a rude gesture from another motorist or pedestrian because of a dangerous manoeuvre’.

Parking is also a problem, with four in ten (38%) confessing they struggle with parallel parking, while a third (32%) have no idea how to check things like tyre pressure and coolant level.

Two thirds (62%) also ‘wish they were a better driver’, with 61% worrying they wouldn’t pass their driving test if they had to sit it again.

The process was easy, Michelle Timmis was so helpful and was on hand to answer any questions I had. Loved the way you got updated at each stage so you know what’s happening and when you’re going to get your car. The car delivery was smooth and so professional. Thank you, I love the car and it was a really good deal.
