The Ford Transit Custom range hit the top spot with buyers in the UK - it ended 2021 as the best selling vehicle in the country ahead of every other van and even every other car.
In a year where businesses relied more than ever on home deliveries to keep the economy flowing, businesses thriving and customers satisfied, 53,394 van customers chose to buy or lease a new Ford Transit Custom over rivals.
The range was popular with private buyers too, with a further 3,750 Ford Tourneo Custom people carriers on the books.
As well as a 10% growth in registrations of the one-tonne Transit Custom model over 2020, the larger two-tonne Transit hit 34,293 registrations last year, making it the second most popular van in the UK.
With record registrations of the Ford Ranger pickup, Ford’s commercial vehicle range accounted for one in three new vans and pickups across the year. Combining both passenger and commercial vehicle sales, Ford also remained the UK’s top-selling brand overall.
“The army of Ford Transit drivers, and the companies employing them, depend on their vehicles - just as homes, businesses and other customers depend on their deliveries,” said Lisa Brankin, Ford of Britain and Ireland managing director.
Ford prioritised vehicle supply in a difficult year, with the pandemic ongoing and semiconductor shortages affecting the entire automotive industry, to grow commercial vehicle sales and meet the demand and loyalty to the Transit brand.”
Ford’s market share may well rise again in 2022, with the introduction of the new all-electric E-Transit. The two-tonne van is currently undergoing testing with customers in the UK, Germany and Norway.
Expected in spring 2022, the E-Transit promises a 217-mile range and a range of customisations and conversions to suit every customer.
The electric van market in the UK surged in 2021, with the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders reporting 12,759 sales - an increase of more than 140% over the previous year. Vauxhall took an impressive 22.8% share of that, led by the e-Vivaro.
As well as the Transit Custom rival, Vauxhall also offers an electric option across every model in its light commercial vehicle range.
