The Ford Transit Custom was the UK’s best-selling vehicle through 2022, ending a strong year for the manufacturer with a repeat of last year’s record.
More than one in three one-tonne commercial vehicles sold during the year was a Ford Transit Custom, but it wasn’t just the best-selling van; the medium-sized Ford outsold the Nissan Qashqai — the UK’s best-selling car — by 58 units.
While clinching the overall crown was a close-run thing, it was more one-sided in the commercial vehicle world. 42,762 Transit Custom vehicles were sold by Ford last year, which is more than double the 16,830 managed by Vauxhall with its Vivaro.
Combined with the passenger-carrying Tourneo Custom, Ford took an almost 40% share of the market segment.
Mandy Dean, Ford Pro lead for UK & Ireland:
"We are so proud to see the Transit Custom crowned as the best-selling vehicle in the UK for the second consecutive year. This accolade is a testament to the tireless efforts and dedication of our team, as well as the loyalty of our customers. The Transit van serves as a vital tool for a variety of trades and professions and keeps Britain moving. With a wide range of body styles and configurations and with new all-electric versions added to the line-up, Ford is helping customers move into a more productive future whilst helping to meet their corporate sustainability commitments.”
The LCV market contracted in 2022 thanks to supply chain constraints, economic shocks and, even now, Covid-related delays. Despite that, Ford outperformed the market, ending the year down 12.8% against 2021, registering a total of 105,913 light vans.
Mike Hawes, SMMT Chief Executive:
“While demand for new vans remained robust throughout 2022, replicating last year’s high levels of fleet renewal was always going to be a challenge with relentless supply chain disruptions and wider economic malaise. A return to growth is expected in 2023, but if this crucial sector is to deliver for the economy, society and the environment, action is needed from all stakeholders, particularly in the areas of charging infrastructure and fiscal frameworks, enabling more van buyers to make the switch.”
Production of Ford’s E-Transit Custom is set to start in late 2023. The best seller’s all-electric successor will be a crucial component in Ford’s commitment to reach zero emissions for all vehicle sales in Europe and carbon neutrality across its European footprint by 2035.
