Four-time Dakar winner Nasser Al-Attiyah spent the weekend sending the Toyota Gazoo Racing Hilux T1+ up the famous Goodwood hill. The heavily modified Hilux pickup is powered by a mid-mounted 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6 petrol engine, with power being sent to all four wheels.
While the engine is similar to that found in the Land Cruiser 300 SUV, it’s tuned to deliver 400hp and 600Nm of torque in the Dakar-conquering Hilux T1+. Larger wheels shod with 37-inch tyres are attached to strengthened suspension with increased travel, allowing it to cope with the tough terrain at high speed.
As if to demonstrate that, Al-Attiyah took the Hilux T1+ on a high-speed run up the smooth tarmac of the Goodwood hill, and then immediately ventured to the rally special stage where the sideways gravel action showed off the truck's abilities.
Nasser Al-Attiyah:
“Of course the festival is a very different environment from what we’re used to dealing with, but the crowds are amazing and it has been a very special experience for both me and Mathieu to give them just a taste of what the Dakar Hilux can do.”
This is the first time that both the Hilux T1+ and its pilots – the multi-title-winning duo of driver Nasser Al-Attiyah and navigator Mathieu Baumel – have appeared at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. The pickup and its crew stormed to victory on its first appearance on the Dakar Rally in January and is now competing in the FIA World Rally-Raid Championship (W2RC).
