The next-generation Amarok is set to be revealed on Thursday 7th July, but ahead of the covers being pulled back, Volkswagen has previewed the pickup with some close-up images and a few highlights of what’s to come.
The Amarok will share a lot of components with the new Ford Ranger - and will even be built alongside the Ranger at the US firm’s Silverton factory in South Africa - but the Volkswagen will differ significantly, with a series of unique details highlighting the premium nature of the German-badged model.
You’ll be able to get the first complete look at the new Amarok via a live online stream at 9am. Until then, enjoy the details we can show you here.
Next-Gen Amarok: LED Lights
In order to ensure that the next-generation Amarok gives a bold first impression, Volkswagen will be fitting the pickup with a bold light signature from the distinctive LED headlights, while higher-specification models (which may be all we get in the UK) will benefit from the firm's IQ.Light setup.
These LED matrix headlights automatically control the output of the headlight in the face of oncoming traffic or well-lit urban areas, making nighttime driving easier, while static cornering lights will highlight tighter corners for improved safety and comfort.
Next-Gen Amarok: Wonderful Wheels
Volkswagen has added a touch of flare at the wheel arches too, fitting bold yet elegant oval wheel arches to frame the alloy wheels shod, for the first time, with all-terrain tyres on some models. In the UK, wheels as large as 21-inches will be available, ensuring a dramatic stance both on and off the road.
Next-Gen Amarok: Tagged Tailgate
Not wanting the back of the truck to blend into the crowd either, Volkswagen has, in the styler that Toyota did with the Hilux, embossed the tailgate with AMAROK in big, bold capital letters.
With a payload of up to 1.2 tonnes and a 3.5-tonne towing limit, the attention-grabbing rear lettering will serve to highlight the cargo-carrying capability of the new Amarok.
Next-Gen Amarok: Digital Dashboard
Inside the cabin, you’ll see a marked improvement compared to the previous Amarok model. The eye will be drawn to the 12-inch infotainment screen sitting front and centre, which will allow easy access to the various controls in the pickup. You won’t be relying solely on digital technology though, as a series of physical switches will back up the ‘floating’ screen.
The digital screen will also allow the driver to configure over 30 driver assist systems, including lane-keeping and lane-changing assistants, lighting and speed assistants, as well as surrounding area view and road sign recognition.
Next-Gen Amarok: An Analogue Touch
This influx of digital technology in the new Amarok hasn’t entirely done away with the old, traditional systems. Alongside the floating digital panel will be a series of analogue switches, buttons and rotary controls.
Rather than the driver needing to delve within menus to find all the right touchscreen options, diverting attention away from the road, important functions such as parking aids, air conditioning, hazard warning lights and driving modes are available at the touch of a physical button.
