Renault gears up to unveil third-gen Master 'aerovan'

November will see the introduction of the third generation of Renault’s Master van, with an innovative ‘aerovan’ design.

On the scene since 1980, the Ford Transit rival has totted up more than three million sales, while the current model has been on the market for 13 years, so this will be a welcome refresh.

Renault has released some teaser shots of the new model in silhouette, so while no details have yet been unveiled, some interesting touches have been hinted at. The front now sees the addition of the ‘fang’ design which Renault used on the Kangoo, while the more steeply raked windscreen leads to the more aerodynamically shaped roof.

Renault's streamlined design, dubbed ‘aerovan’, promises to improve efficiency. According to the manufacturer, diesel-powered models should expect as much as 10mpg improvements to economy, while the electric van will see a 21% reduction in energy use.

No details have so far been released about the powertrains - Renault is keeping that one for the official reveal at the Solutrans show in Lyon, France, but the expectation is that the diesel range will remain largely unchanged. It’s the electric models that are likely to see significant improvements. The 52kWh battery pack that is currently in use in the Master E-Tech (below) has a range of just 126 miles, so in order to keep Renault competitive with rivals such as the Ford E-Transit and Fiat e-Ducato, that is expected to be expanded.

Alongside developments with its electric range, Renault has been developing a hydrogen-fuelled van too. While being converted by Hyvia, the van has been developed solely by Renault, which should help to reduce both costs and complexity of the project, but hydrogen supplies for refuelling will still be scarce.

Most of the ‘aerovan’ details are being kept tightly under wraps ahead of its introduction on November 21. We know that production will remain at the Renault plant in Batilly, France, where the facilities have been redesigned so that the vehicle can be produced in a “new and innovative way”.
