Major tech revamp coming for Volkswagen Crafter

Volkswagen’s large van, the Crafter, is getting an update that will see striking improvements in both cabin comfort and technology.

The updates will be evident immediately, with the most prominent being set front and centre of the newly designed dashboard in the guise of a 10.3-inch infotainment screen. There will also be a 12.9-inch screen available as an option. The system will include Volkswagen’s latest ‘modular infotainment matrix’ software, so most things you’ll want to control within the van, including heating and ventilation, will be via the screen.

There are more digital updates elsewhere, with a customisable instrument panel ahead of the driver. The operator will be able to select different modes to be displayed via the steering wheel controls, such as navigation, telephone, infotainment, or just a speed readout.

On models with a manual gearbox, the gear lever remains on an extension to the dashboard, while on automatic models, there’s a handy cuddy hole instead. The auto gear selector has been relocated onto the steering column, and the manual handbrake has been replaced by an electronic switch version across all vans, which now sits to the side of the infotainment screen.

Head of technical development at Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, Karsten Franz: “We have updated the Crafter’s electronics architecture to integrate the next-generation infotainment, assist and convenience systems into the successful model. This means the Crafter will remain the most advanced commercial vehicle model series in its class.”

The update will see new driver aids being added to the Crafter. Each model will receive enhanced safety technology, including a blind spot warning system that can pick out cyclists as well as larger vehicles. The rear cross-traffic alert system has been extended to cover the front of the vehicle, so the braking will be automatically applied if an oncoming vehicle is detected when pulling out of a blind junction.

Chief designer, Albert Kirzinger: “The Crafter sets itself apart with a timeless, high-quality and clear design. However, it also sets standards for practical use right from the start. We have, therefore, deliberately focused on revamping the interior. The result is an intuitive state-of-the-art cockpit landscape that reflects modern times and makes the driver’s everyday work easier.”
You can lease the current VW Crafter large van with Select Van Leasing from £381 per month*.

The updated van is set to arrive in April 2024.
