KGM 'O100 Concept' previews future electric pick-up

Korean manufacturer KGM has confirmed it will launch an electric pick-up truck in the UK, with a double-cab model scheduled for production during the second half of 2024.

KGM — previously known as SsangYong — revealed its O100 concept, which previews the new model. The O100 is smaller than KGM’s current Musso pick-up and is based on the monocoque chassis underpinning the forthcoming mid-sized Torres electric SUV.

Given the monocoque design, the O100 is unlikely to be as rugged as the Musso (below) with its ladder-frame chassis, but for many pickup owners, that won’t be a problem; there’s a growing trend for pickup trucks as lifestyle vehicles rather than off-road machines, particularly in the US, where the Ford Maverick and Hyundai Santa Cruz are popular. With this being a burgeoning market, Toyota and Volkswagen are also entering the market, with pint-sized pick-ups under development.

KGM has released few details about its electric pickup, but we know that Chinese manufacturer BYD has partnered with KGM parents, KG Mobility, and will produce the battery packs in Korea for both the pickup and the Torres EVX.

The partnership with BYD is a tactical move by KG Mobility, which will allow the rapid rollout of an electric line-up and ensure the company has a solid and sustainable growth plan.

This isn’t the first time KG Mobility and BYD have buddied up. Previously, there have been collaborations to develop plug-in hybrid technologies, with a next-generation system in the works which will roll out for a 2025 Torres-based model.

Kwak Jae-sun, KG Mobility chairman, said: “We anticipate that this expanded cooperation with BYD will strengthen our electric vehicle line-up, including the Torres EVX, KR10, and F100, while reorganising our product range to focus on eco-friendly vehicles. This includes introducing a dedicated electric vehicle platform and launching hybrid products."

Jae-sun also suggested that a class-leading warranty from the manufacturer will back future EVs.

He added: "KG Mobility's development direction is evident in the recently released Torres EVX. We received an excellent response from domestic electric vehicle consumers by offering a 10-year, 1 million km battery warranty, the highest in the world.”
