The next-generation Ford Transit Courier has become the first van to achieve a Euro NCAP 'Platinum' award, the highest safety rating awarded by the independent safety authority.
The Transit Courier was put through its paces, with safety and technology onboard being thoroughly tested before Euro NCAP declared it to have “all-round excellent performance” with “a lot of safety equipment available, almost all of it standard equipment on all grades, and this generally works well.”
There is plenty of emphasis on advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) from Euro NCAP, where the technology can help prevent or mitigate the effects of accidents. This is particularly important in the LCV sector, as incidents involving vans tend to be more severe for the other vehicles, as many accidents result in head-on and rear-end crashes due to a loss of control.
Euro NCAP is satisfied that the Ford Transit Courier easily meets the requirements for a platinum rating, thanks to the use of the same crash avoidance technology as in its passenger-car counterparts.
The good news didn’t stop there for the Ford Transit Courier; maximum points were awarded for its lane support technologies, including lane-keeping systems and blind spot information systems, as well as speed assistance systems such as Intelligent Speed Assist.
The top-flight platinum rating is applied to all Transit Courier variants, including the diesel and petrol-powered models, as well as the forthcoming electric E-Transit Courier, which will begin production next year.
Euro NCAP secretary general, Michiel van Ratingen: “Euro NCAP strongly encourages van manufacturers to equip their vehicles with the same crash avoidance technology that is already available on the market and fitted to passenger cars. The Ford Transit Courier delivers on this with almost all of its safety equipment available as standard and hence becomes Euro NCAP's first platinum award winner under the new 2023 rules. Congratulations to Ford on this result!”
The Ford Transit Courier might be at the top of the table with its platinum rating, but with the Transit, E-Transit and Transit Custom all receiving gold awards in 2021, it is in good company.
