Ford is enhancing the E-Transit electric van with the option of an increased battery capacity. The Extended Range pack replaces the existing 68kWh battery with a 30% larger pack, offering 89kWh of power, increasing the van's range to as far as 249 miles.
The larger battery pack will also provide customers with faster charging performance. The updated E-Transit is capable of charging at an increased rate of 180kW — a significant increase from the standard battery pack's 115kW. Once connected to a suitable charger, a quick ten-minute top-up can add up to 72 miles of range, and in as little as 28 minutes, the battery pack can go from 10% to 80% charged.
For those relying on a home or depot-based charger, maximum charging speeds have been increased to 22kW, meaning a full charge should take less than six hours.
A heat pump has been added to the E-Transit to heat the cabin more efficiently at lower temperatures. The vapour-injected system, first introduced in the E-Transit Custom, improves the vehicle’s energy efficiency and optimises its range during colder weather.
Ford has also updated some of the E-Transit's digital features, including over-the-air software updates, an integrated 5G modem to enhance connectivity and built-in Alexa AI.
Like all other models and variants in the range, the E-Transit Extended Range is fully integrated with the connected charging and software solutions of the Ford Pro platform. The platform is designed to minimise downtime and customer cost of ownership by streamlining servicing and optimising energy management of vehicles on the road.
Hans Schep, general manager at Ford Pro: “The extended range option for E-Transit is another example of the Ford Pro commitment to making high-productivity electric fleets a reality across Europe. Giving customers the option to drive further between charges alongside a wide choice of body styles and support from Ford Pro’s connected ecosystem strengthens our position as their trusted partner for complete fleet solutions.”
To ensure as many customers as possible are able to utilise the extended-range battery pack, it will be available in 19 model variants across the Ford line-up. L3 and L4 body lengths will be fitted with van, double-cab-in-van, and chassis cab body styles, with gross vehicle weights from 3,500 to 4,250kg. Maximum payload will range from 1,460kg for vans to 1,814kg for chassis cab models, allowing converters to take advantage of the flexibility.
Also available is Pro Power Onboard, which can deliver 2.3kW of exportable power from the vehicle battery for running tools, equipment and conversions.
Customers won’t be able to buy the E-Transit Extended Range until 2025, and pricing isn’t expected to be released until later this year. In the meantime, customers choosing the 2024 model of Europe’s best-selling large electric van will benefit from improved service intervals, with dealer visits required only every two years.
