- VW Tayron gets world premiere
- Practical SUV sits between VW Tiguan and VW Touareg
- Seven-seat models available
- Plug-in hybrid variants offer 62 miles of EV range
Volkswagen has thrown the sheets off a brand new SUV - the practical and powerful Tayron.
When UK order books open at the beginning of next year, the Tayron will be available with a choice of either five or seven seats and a host of different powertrains, including traditional petrol and diesel mills.
The plug-in hybrid engines stand out from the rest, coming with power of up to 272 PS and an electric range of up to 62 miles.
Size wise, the Tayron will sit neatly between the smaller VW Tiguan and larger VW Touareg. It'll also replace the seven-seat VW Tiguan Allspace.
It’s also being billed as the perfect tow car. With ‘4MOTION’ all-wheel drive, the Tayron is capable of lugging a maximum trailer weight of up to 2,500 kg, while a folding towing bracket is up for grabs and comes as standard with a Trailer Assist manoeuvring system.
Martin Sander, Member of the Volkswagen Brand Board of Management responsible for Sales, Marketing and Aftersales, said: “The new Tayron combines everything that a Volkswagen stands for: versatility, comfort and new technology. With up to seven seats, a premium interior, generous storage space and innovative drive systems, the large SUV is the ideal companion for families and adventurers alike.”
VW says the Tayron has a ‘powerful’ exterior with an elongated silhouette to either accommodate seven seats or to offer an enormous 885 litres of luggage space.
There are LED headlights and illuminated logos at the front and back as standard.
Entry-level ‘Life’ models get three-zone automatic air con, a 12.5-inch infotainment screen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, sun blinds in the rear doors, and 18-inch alloys.
There’s also a full suite of driver assistance and safety systems fitted as standard, including adaptive cruise control, lane change and lane keep assist, automatic emergency braking, and VW’s self-parking ‘Park Assist Plus’ tech.
Certain models also come with an infotainment system where ChatGPT - the artificial intelligence bot - is automatically built in.
When it comes to the powertrains, you’ll have a choice of ‘eTSI’ mild hybrid, the ‘eHybrid’ plug-in hybrid, petrol or diesel. All are coupled to an automatic DSG gearbox.
Power begins at 150 PS (for the mild hybrid) while more oomph is reserved for the plug-in hybrid engines, which get either 204 PS or 272 PS, courtesy of a 19.7 kWh battery.
Both PHEVs can achieve up to 62 miles of range using electricity alone and both accept 50 kW DC charging.
Order books have already opened in Germany where the Tayron is priced from 45,475 euros but UK costs and spec are still to be confirmed.
When it comes to rivals, the VW Tayron will compete with SUVs like the Hyundai Santa Fe, Kia Sorento, and Skoda Kodiaq.
