Here’s a contender for coolest new car of the year - the all-electric Volkswagen ID. Buzz GTX hot MPV!
And who says people movers need to be dull, anyway?
VW says this sporty new variant of the ID. Buzz is the ‘most powerful series-production Bulli of all time’ - with ‘Bulli’ being VW-speak for its adventure-ready buses, going way back to the 1950s.
The regular VW ID. Buzz (below) gets power of 203 PS and a 0-62mph acceleration time that could never be accused of being quick, being around 10 seconds.
This new GTX variant, however, is a different beast entirely.
All-wheel drive is standard, as is power of 340 PS, which means the ID. Buzz GTX can hit 62mph from a standstill in just 6.5 seconds. That’s almost as quick as a VW Golf GTI - which ain’t bad at all for an MPV with seating for up to seven people.
Speaking of which, the VW ID. Buzz GTX comes in two wheelbases, long and standard, with the stretched-out variant enjoying a 86 kWh battery while the regular one makes do with a 79 kWh unit. The standard wheelbase can be configured with five or six seats, while it’s the long model that’ll eventually be offered with seven seats.
The GTX Bulli gets a towing capacity of 1,800 kg, which makes it ideal for lugging bike, boat or horse trailers, says VW.
The 79 kWh battery can be charged at DC quick-charging stations with up to 185 kWh, while the larger 86 kWh battery accepts up to 200 kW DC, which can replenish the energy from 10-80% in around 26 minutes.
The ID. Buzz GTX also gets performance style flourishes both inside and out. The cabin features a black headliner, unique seats with red piping, and a sporty steering wheel.
Luggage capacity is going to be a big deal if you’re leasing an MPV, so it’s good to know the ID. Buzz GTX gets a whopping 1,121 litres of space in standard, five-seat mode, while the extended ID. Buzz GTX is even more spacious, coming with 1,340 litres available.
Standard equipment on all Buzz GTXs includes a 12.9-inch touchscreen and an infotainment system supported by the AI bot ‘ChatGPT’, as well as an illuminated touch bar for temperature and volume control.
Another new feature is a Wellness app that uses ‘preconfigured programmes to adjust various vehicle functions to improve well-being while driving or charging’, according to VW.
Meanwhile you also get the option of a ‘smart glass’ panoramic sunroof, which can be switched from clear to opaque at the touch of a button.
Lars Krause, member of the Board of Management responsible for Sales and Marketing at Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, says: “The most powerful Bulli of all time, with two wheelbases and two battery sizes, available as a 5-, 6- or 7-seater, plus the standard all-wheel drive – for optimum pulling power and traction in every driving situation. It should really be called the ID. Buzz GTXXL! This means 2024 is getting off to a really good start.”
Order books are due to open in the summer of this year, with pricing still to be confirmed.
And in the meantime, you can lease the VW ID. Buzz with Select Car Leasing.
