BMW teases new fully-electric Sports Activity Vehicle

This is the new BMW Vision Neue Klasse X - a concept car with a long name and a big future.

BMW is ushering-in a whole new family of electric vehicles, which it’s calling the ‘Neue Klasse’, and which also gets its own fresh design language, described as being ‘clear, elegant and timeless’.

We’ve already glimpsed one of the first members of this Neue Klass - the stunning ‘Vision’ saloon (below, right)- which was revealed last year as a little hint at what a fully-electric 3 Series might look like.

Now it’s the turn of the ‘Vision Neue Klasse X’, a ‘Sports Activity Vehicle’, or ‘SAV’, as BMW calls it, which will join the ranks of BMW’s other X cars when it goes into series production next year.

Yep, that’s right, BMW is saying the Vision Neue Klasse X - or a version of it, at least - will make the jump from drawing board to factory floor, and it’s likely to replace the electric iX3 in the German firm’s line-up.

Oliver Zipse, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW, says: “Together with the BMW Vision Neue Klasse, the BMW Vision Neue Klasse X showcases the breadth of our future BMW model line-up. The Neue Klasse reflects the variety of all the models that customers want today and in the future – from sporty sedan, with all its derivatives, to modern SAV family. In this way, we are underlining that the Neue Klasse is much more than just a car or a specific concept; it is redefining the BMW brand – and, at the same time, will be more BMW than ever.”

Interior room is a big thing with the BMW Vision Neue Klasse X, with a ‘pared-down’ cabin lending itself to an ‘airy spaciousness that is complemented by textiles in warm colours’.

The exterior features an eye-catching new BMW kidney grille, ‘reimagined as a three-dimensional sculpture with vertically aligned and backlit contours’.

BMW is also promising a state-of-the-art sound system that can be customised at the flick of a finger via something called the ‘HYPERSONX WHEEL’.

There’s no word yet on what sort of range the Vision Neue Klasse X might get, but it will feature cutting-edge 800-volt architecture - as soon with cars like the Porsche Macan EV and the new Audi Q6 e-tron - which equates to rapid charging on the go. You should be able to add as much as 186 miles worth of range in just ten minutes.
