- Facelift for Volvo XC90 SUV
- New exterior with redesigned front grille and lights
- Uprated cabin with better tech
- Improved suspension for even greater comfort
This is the facelifted new Volvo XC90, with the Scandinavian firm proudly boasting that they’ve made ‘the best ever better’.
The all-wheel drive XC90 is, of course, Volvo’s flagship combustion-engined SUV, sitting at the summit of the firm’s range alongside the fully-electric EX90.
As before, the premium seven-seater is available with a 455 hp plug-in hybrid powertrain that now unlocks a range of up to 44 miles using electricity alone.
It’s also one of the safest cars available to lease, coming with a ‘safety cage’ structure made from hot-formed boron steel as well as a full suite of radar and camera-assisted danger-avoidance systems.
Style wise, there are subtle exterior changes for the XC90, with Volvo talking about a ‘more contemporary’ feel which reflects the manufacturer’s ongoing transition to fully-electric vehicles.
There’s a fresh front grille, a redesigned bonnet, slimmer headlights and new alloy wheel options.
Meanwhile things get even more interesting when you look at the interior.
The central touchscreen has increased in size to 11.2 inches while also running a higher resolution. There are new features for the infotainment system, too, while your most popular apps - like maps, media and phone mirroring - can now be accessed directly from the home screen.
The dashboard has been redesigned with a more horizontal shape, vertical air vents and ambient lighting flourishes, while a liberal use of recycled materials gives a more textured finish.
There’s more storage space in the cabin than before, with an extra cup holder and the wireless phone charger placed behind the central tunnel for easier access.
The optional Bowers & Wilkins High Fidelity audio system can also ‘faithfully replicate the acoustics of a stage, a concert hall or a jazz club’, says Volvo. Or heavy metal mosh pit, presumably, should that be your musical taste!
The standard suspension system has been improved, with each individual damper now able to adapt mechanically to current road conditions, while the optional air suspension set-up works with an active chassis to make make subtle adjustments based on the car, road and driver - monitoring it all 500 times per second - to give the most comfortable ride possible.
Besides the plug-in hybrid engine, you can also lease the Volvo XC90 with a petrol mild-hybrid engine, with ‘B5’ and ‘B6’ variants assisted by a 48v lithium-ion battery and an integrated starter/generator which can help reduce emissions and fuel consumption by up to 15 per cent.
Prices for the new Volvo XC90 begin at £72,650 and you can order your lease car now. Customer deliveries are scheduled for the back end of the year.
Rivals to the Volvo XC90 include the BMW X5, Audi Q7, and the Land Rover Defender.
