Ford debuts powerful new plug-in hybrid Ranger pick-up

The IAA Transportation show in Hanover provided the ideal platform for Ford to reveal its new Ranger PHEV pick-up. 

Promising full payload, towing, and off-road capabilities, this ‘no compromise’ plug-in hybrid Ranger will provide the usual workhorse performance as the regular models but with improved economy and a zero-emission electric power range of up to 27 miles.


The new PHEV model will introduce Pro Power Onboard to the Ranger, which enables customers to harness the energy in the drive battery to run tools on-site without needing a generator or sapping the vehicle's 12-volt car battery. 

The addition of the PHEV to the range has given rise to a new PHEV-exclusive trim level, with the 'Stormtrak' edition joining the existing XLT and WIldtrak models. The Stormtrak trim adds several rugged elements, such as 18-inch alloy wheels, fender vents, a honeycomb grille and Stormtrak decals. The equipment list is bolstered with LED headlights, a flexible rack system, trailer backup assist and a 360-degree camera. The new trim is available in a Stormtrak-exclusive Chill Grey colour or Agate Black.


Hans Schep, general manager of Ford Pro, Europe, said: “The all-new Ranger PHEV delivers the benefits of electrification hand-in-hand with the hard-working performance that has built Ranger a loyal fanbase in Europe. We have perfected our first PHEV pick-up in Europe to be a hugely capable tool for work and off-roading, as well as a premium vehicle with the comfort, connectivity and EV-only capability for family duties.”

Plug-in Powertrain

Under the bonnet of the new Ranger PHEV, a 2.3-litre EcoBoost petrol engine is combined with a 102hp electric motor, which is powered by an 11.8kWh battery pack. The duo combine to create a total output of 279hp, while the mammoth 690Nm of torque produced is more than any other Ford Ranger, including the high-performance Raptor. 


The Ranger PHEV’s modular hybrid transmission integrates the electric motor with the 10-speed automatic gearbox, allowing the driver to decide how and when to utilise the battery power. EV Now, EV Later, and EV Charge modes do as they suggest, but most will leave the Ranger to select the mode automatically for the most efficient use. 

Charging the PHEV via a standard three-pin plug socket takes less than four hours, making it easy to ensure there’s a fully charged battery available each morning. At average home electricity rates of around 25p/kWh, that’s the financial equivalent of around 60mpg when running on pure electric power, but cheap off-peak rates could see that improve beyond the equivalent of 150mpg.


Pick-up Practicality

The Ranger PHEV will have the same payload and towing capacities as the diesel-powered model, despite the weighty addition of the battery pack and electric motor. That means each model will carry a payload of at least a tonne, while towing up to 3.5 tonnes behind it will be possible.

Power supply sockets in the load box will provide a 2.3kW power supply via the Pro Power Onboard technology. This will be enough to allow customers to use high-draw power tools and equipment at a job site, or run lights and a fridge at a campsite, for example. An optional upgrade features two 15amp outlets, each providing up to 3.45kW of power, — enough to drive heavy-duty equipment when out in the field.


The Ranger PHEV will be fitted with Ford’s latest e-4WD system which has a dual-range transfer box and a rear differential lock, allowing the hybrid model to match the off-road abilities of the standard diesel version. The positioning of the hybrid battery unit at the centre of the vehicle ensures that the approach, breakover and departure angles remain unaffected.


Built at the Silverton facility in South Africa, the first deliveries of Ford’s Ranger PHEV are expected in Spring 2025. The PHEV will be backed by the same comprehensive suite of servicing, charging, software, and financing offers as all other Ford commercial vehicles.
