Volvo has thrown the sheets off its new fully electric EX30 - the smallest SUV the manufacturer has ever created.
While the baby SUV might have diminutive proportions, Volvo says the EX30 has a ‘big role to play as a key model in Volvo Cars’ electrification strategy and growth ambitions’.
Priced from £33,795, the EX30 will compete in the leasing market with the award-winning Jeep Avenger as well as the Smart #1 and the incoming Honda e:Ny1.
And the other crucial thing to know about the EX30 is that it’s not just the dinkiest Volvo yet, it’s also the fastest-accelerating car in the Swedish firm’s illustrious history, beating the likes of the recent Volvo S60 Polestar Engineered.
The most rapid variant is the ‘EX30 Twin Motor Performance’, which has power of 428 hp and which Volvo says can hurry from 0-62 mph in just 3.6 seconds. That makes it just 0.1 seconds slower than the Tesla Model Y Performance.
Despite that ability to push your head back into the seat, the EX30 Twin Motor Performance will also be able to travel up to 286 miles between charges, thanks to a 69 kWh battery.
There are two other powertrains available.
The ‘Single Motor’ variant has a 51 kWh battery, power of 272 hp, and a range of up to 214 miles.
Meanwhile the ‘Single Motor Extended Range’ has the larger 69 kWh battery, power of 272 hp, and the longest range of the lot at a maximum 298 miles.
How do those ranges compare with the competition? Well, the Jeep Avenger manages a range of up to 248 miles, so the EX30 fares well.
Besides the powertrains, there will be two equipment grades at launch - Plus and Ultra - while a cheaper ‘Core’ trim will arrive later.
Plus gets a 12.3 inch touchscreen, dual zone climate control, a swanky sound system from Harman Kardon that comes with a dashboard soundbar, front and rear parking sensors and rear camera and heated front seats and steering wheel.
Crucially, the Plus trim also gets a heat pump when it’s married to either the Single Motor Extended Range or the Twin Motor Performance powertrains, which will work hard to make sure you get as close as possible to the maximum range between charges.
The Ultra models add goodies like a 360-degree camera with virtual 3D view, fixed panoramic sunroof, Volvo’s ‘Park Pilot Assist’ self-parking system, larger 20-inch alloys, and a quicker 22kW on-board charger.
Kristian Elvefors, Volvo Car UK Managing Director, said: “The EX30 has huge potential for expanding the reach and performance of our brand in the UK. It brings together our established strengths in electrification, safety and design without compromise in a convenient, compact package. With an authentic approach to improving sustainability and lowering carbon emissions, it will have strong appeal to urban consumers looking for an efficient electric car that’s easy to live with. Together with our retail partners, we are excited to bring fresh thinking and a genuinely new proposition to the market for small SUVs.”
Deliveries of the Volvo EX30 will begin early next year.
