The most affordable Tesla Model Y is now available to lease - and you might be surprised at just how cheap it is.
Last year Tesla announced that a new version of its compact SUV would be made available - the Rear-Wheel Drive, or RWD, variant.
As you might be able to guess by the moniker, it jettisons the dual-motor, all-wheel drive system enjoyed by other Model Ys in the range in favour of a single motor powertrain that reduces the cost to leasing customers.
That RWD Tesla Model Y is now ready to be enjoyed - and prices begin at just £381 per month*, compared with around £533 per month* for an all-wheel drive equivalent.
It makes the rear-wheel drive Model Y more affordable to lease than the cheapest Ford Mustang Mach-E or Audi Q4 e-tron, which are two key rivals to the Tesla.
And yet you'll still find yourself behind the wheel of an extremely capable car.
The RWD Tesla Model Y has a range of up to 283 miles between charges and power of 260 bhp. That's enough poke for you to be able to accelerate from 0-60 mph in 6.6 seconds. Meanwhile the range of the RWD exceeds how far you can travel with the 'Standard Range' Ford Mustang Mach-E, which can journey 273 miles before you need to stop and plug in once more.
The 'budget' version of the Model Y also still arrives with plenty of creature comforts - as you'd expect from any Tesla - including a panoramic glass roof, a large 15 inch touchscreen, wireless phone charging, heated seats, heated steering wheel, a premium sound system, and a reversing camera.
A full suite of driver assistance and safety tech is par for the course, including collision avoidance and automatic emergency braking.
You can also add extras to your lease - including the ‘Enhanced Autopilot’ pack at around £127 extra per month - which includes ‘Navigate on Autopilot’, ‘Auto Lane Change’, ‘Autopark’, ‘Summon’ and ‘Smart Summon’ features.
The Tesla Model Y should keep you exceptionally safe, too, as it was recently awarded the full five stars from the European New Car Assessment Programme - aka Euro NCAP.
Matthew Avery, Chief Research Strategy Officer from Thatcham Research, said:
“The Tesla Model Y has aced testing, securing outstanding all-round safety ratings. It has scored the highest grade ever seen in the Safety Assist category at 98% along with 2022’s highest Adult Occupant Protection score of 97%. In this respect, Tesla is setting the standard for emergency safety system performance.”
