Porsche Mission X ready to wreck records

Say hello to Porsche’s new breed of hypercar - the electric Mission X.

The sumptuous two-seater is a new concept that has been revealed by Porsche to mark the German firm’s 75th birthday.

And Porsche reckons the Mission X could ‘lay the groundwork for the future’.

If it does get put into series production, there are BIG ambitions for what the battery-powered beast could achieve.

Porsche hopes the Mission X will, ultimately, be the fastest road-legal vehicle around the Nürburgring Nordschleife racetrack, have a power-to-weight ratio of roughly one PS per kilogram, have stronger downforce than the current 911 GT3 RS, and be twice as quick to charge as the Taycan Turbo S.

While Porsche is keeping precise figures close to its chest at present, you can have a good guess at what sort of oomph the Mission X might be packing.

The electric Lotus Evija, for example, weighs around 1,680 Kg, and the Mission X might have similar amounts of heft.

If, as Porsche is saying, that the Mission X has a ‘power-to-weight ratio of roughly one PS per kilogram’, you could be looking at a power output in excess of 1,500 PS, which should give it a near sub-2.0 second 0-62 mph acceleration time.

As another comparison, the 1,900 PS electric Rimac Nevera gets to 62 mph from a standstill in 1.81 seconds.

There are three iconic cars that Porsche is using as a touchstone for the Mission X - the Porsche 959 from the mid-1980s, the Carrera GT from the early Noughties, and the limited edition, plug-in hybrid 918 Spyder, which we first saw in 2013.

There are Le Mans-style doors that open upwards to the front, in a further nod to Porsche’s racing heritage. A lightweight glass dome with an exoskeleton made of carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic extends over both occupants.

Meanwhile those vertical headlights are new, but borrowed from historic racing cars from the past like the Porsche 906 and 908.

There’s also illuminated Porsche lettering under the windscreen.

Inside the cabin you’ll find carbon fibre seats with six-point seatbelts integrated into the monocoque, an open-top steering wheel, and multiple cameras on board to record your track action.

Oliver Blume, Chairman of the Executive Board of Porsche AG, tells us: “The Porsche Mission X is a technology beacon for the sports car of the future. It picks up the torch of iconic sports cars of decades past: like the 959, the Carrera GT and the 918 Spyder before it, the Mission X provides critical impetus for the evolutionary development of future vehicle concepts. Daring to dream and dream cars are two sides of the same coin for us: Porsche has only remained Porsche by constantly changing.”
