Here it is - the swanky new Volvo EM90 electric MPV, unveiled properly for the very first time.
We brought you news about the EM90 earlier this month, when Volvo teased pics of the opulent cabin while promising ‘a comfortable living room on the move’.
And now we've learned precisely what lease customers can expect when it comes to range, power and tech.
The first thing you need to know is that the EM90 is a six-seater, and designed for either families who crave utmost luxury, or business execs who need ferrying to appointments.
The exterior look is very much in-keeping with Volvo’s design ethos, with Scandinavian ‘Thor’s Hammer’ headlights, an illuminating front grille, and vertical tail lamps at the rear.
The cabin features a huge 15.4-inch infotainment screen for the driver, as well as another 15.6-inch screen in the rear, mounted in the roof, which folds down whenever you want some entertainment, or to sign-in to video business meetings.
The EM90 is underpinned by a large 116 kWh battery that provides a hefty range of up to 458 miles between charges. There’s one caveat to that figure, though, in that the ‘458-mile’ number has been arrived at under the ‘CLTC’ - or the ‘China light-duty vehicle test cycle. That’s because the EM90 is going on sale in that country first.
But the WLTP - ‘Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure’ - stats we refer to here in the UK - might be different, so the quoted range between charges might need altering for the EM90 when it does eventually arrive in Blighty.
Wherever you are in the world, the EM90’s battery will give power of 272 PS, which means the MPV can accelerate from 0-62mph in 8.3 seconds. Rapid charging will also be able to take the battery from 10-80 per cent full in less than 30 minutes. Bi-directional charging means you can use the EM90’s battery as a power bank to charge other electric cars and appliances.
You can also expect a full suite of advanced driver assistance systems inside the EM90, courtesy of high-definition cameras, surround view cameras, a millimetre wave radar and ultrasonic radars.
Åsa Haglund, the head of Volvo Cars Safety Centre, explains: “Safety is always our top priority and we aim to make our cars some of the safest on the market. The EM90 is the latest expression of that ambition. The premium MPV segment is a new one for us, and the EM90 allows us to bring our long heritage and extensive knowledge in automotive safety to a new group of customers.”
Volvo is promising passengers in the EM90 an ‘outstanding experience’. A peaceful journey is aided by sound isolation and road noise cancellation tech, while dual chamber air suspension and ‘silent tyres’ help to smoothen the ride further.
Meanwhile a high-end Bowers & Wilkins sound system with 21 speakers means the EM90 is also a ‘private concert hall on the move’.
Jim Rowan, chief executive of Volvo Cars, adds: “It’s an age-old cliché, but there really is no place like home. A place to connect with your loved ones, to truly be yourself. It’s this feeling of home that inspired our new EM90, a car with room for life.”
There’s no word about how much the Volvo EM90 might cost when it hits the UK, but you can expect it to compete with the £89,995 Lexus LM MPV - which you can lease with Select from £1,205 per month*.
