Volkswagen has revealed its all-new Passat estate, which promises ‘business class’ levels of both comfort and efficiency.
It might surprise you to learn that the Passat is one of VW’s best-selling cars of all time - behind only the Golf and actually ahead of the much-loved Beetle.
And now, after 50 years in the game and nine generations, the Passat has been treated to yet another major overhaul.
First thing’s first, the diesel engine is going the way of the dodo. As of next year, when the Passat arrives, it’ll be fuelled by petrol - or petrol and electricity combined - alone.
So, if you still want to lease a diesel VW Passat estate, get in there now while you still can - with prices from £412 per month for the diesel model*.
The Passat estate remains a rival to the BMW 3 Series Touring, Audi A4 Avant, and the Skoda Superb estate.
There are sharp new looks for the exterior and a redesigned interior that ups the ante when it comes to luxury and relaxation.
The Passat is now available with adaptive chassis control - in the form of a ‘DCC Pro’ system - which should make mincemeat of the UK’s potholed roads.
Massage seats are available on certain trims, while legroom has also been boosted thanks to the fact the Passat has grown 50mm in length.
Brand new for 2024 will be a fuel efficient mild-hybrid powertrain. It combines a 48 V battery with a 150 PS petrol engine and ‘transforms kinetic energy into electric energy and makes it possible to coast without using the combustion engine’, says VW.
Also new for next year is a powerful 2.0 TSI petrol engine with 204 PS, which is available with the fully-loaded R-Line models. Up until now, the most powerful petrol engine you could enjoy with a Passat lease was a smaller 1.5 litre unit.
As before, the VW Passat is available with a choice of two different plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrains.
But what’s fresh for 2024 is that these PHEV systems have been overhauled to offer more power and a greater electric range.
The Passat PHEV with the most oomph right now has around 218 PS. That’ll get hiked to 272 PS with the new, range-topping ‘eHybrid’ models, while VW says an electric range of up to 62 miles is possible. That’s almost double the range of the outgoing model.
A Volkswagen spokesperson adds: “This distance turns the new Passat Estate into an electric vehicle for everyday life – this is additionally ensured by short charging times as the battery can now be charged at AC charge points with 11 kW instead of the previous 3.6 kW. The Passat Estate eHybrid can even be charged with up to 50 kW at DC fast charging stations.”
The new Passat estate will launch with a full suite of assist systems, including the ability to park itself on command.
And while you could previously lease a VW Passat as a saloon, there’s no sign of a new one appearing any time soon.
