BMW iX1 about to get more affordable

BMW is readying to launch a more affordable version of its all electric iX1 SUV - which shaves almost nine grand off the asking price.

Up until now, the BMW iX1 has been available solely in ‘xDrive30’ guise, which gives it considerable power of 313 hp and a range of up to 270 miles between charges.

But what about lease customers who don’t need all of that oomph, and who crave a model that’ll lower the monthly leasing fee?

Step forward the new ‘eDrive20’ powertrain, which should be made available in the next few weeks.

It brings the asking price, to buy outright, down from £53,295 to £44,560 for the entry-level ‘Sport’ model and it’s an rrp drop that should be reflected in your monthly lease cost.

Both the existing BMW iX1 xDrive30 and the new eDrive20 make use of the same sized battery - a 64.7 kWh unit.

The fresh eDrive20 has reduced power of 204 hp, but actually boosts the available range up to a maximum of 296 miles.

And with a 0-62mph acceleration time of 8.6 seconds, the iX1 eDrive20 should be plenty-fast for most drivers.

Charging at 11 kW is standard, which can take the battery from zero to 100 per cent full in 6.5 hours. Three-phase AC charging of up to 22 kW is optionally available, which reduces charging time to 3 hours 45 mins.

Meanwhile rapid DC 130 kWh charging can take the battery from 10-80% full in just 29 minutes.

The BMW iX1 sits below the iX3 in the German firm’s range and remains a rival to the Audi Q4 e-tron, Volvo XC40 Recharge and, of course, the Tesla Model Y.

The new eDrive20 version will also arrive generously equipped as standard, so that it can continue to compete with the best cars in its class.

The kit list includes a BMW Maps navigation system, dual-zone automatic air conditioning, and driver assistance systems like the ‘Parking Assistant’ with ‘Reversing Assist Camera’.

It also gets the super-fast BMW Operating System 9 as well as a BMW ‘Curved Display’, which consists of a 10.25-inch Information Display and a 10.7-inch Control Display, both housed under the same single glass surface.

The BMW iX1 eDrive20 should be available to lease by the end of the year.

You can lease the BMW iX1 xDrive30 with Select Car Leasing from £530 per month*.
