New VW ID.7 is ‘sophisticated limousine’

Volkswagen is describing its upcoming ID.7 saloon as a sophisticated ‘limousine’ that’s set to shake-up the luxury electric vehicle market.

The ID.7 was unveiled earlier this year and it’s set to go into full production imminently.

It’s going to be an important car for VW, not least because the German firm says it’ll have a whopping-great range of up to 435 miles between charges.

And the way that VW is now describing its flagship car as a luxurious ‘limousine’, it’s going to compete in the upper reaches of the class alongside the BMW i4 and the Mercedes-Benz EQE Saloon. You can also consider it a competitor to the Tesla Model 3

This week VW has also lifted the lid on how the ID.7’s super-smooth aerodynamics means it can travel so far between charges.

A VW spokesperson says that ‘with a range of up to 700 kilometres, the Volkswagen limousine is an efficiency champion’, while designer Daniel Scharfschwerdt adds: “When designing the ID.7, there was a greater focus on aerodynamics than for practically any other model. This can be seen in the low front end, the flowing transition into the bonnet, and the fast windscreen. The coupé-like roof form and the tapering rear end are also designed for ideal aerodynamic performance.”

The ID.7 has an almost completely closed underbody while there are innovative new wheel spoilers on the front wheels which ‘guide the air along the wheels under the vehicle with minimum turbulence’

A spokesperson reveals: “Air curtains at the sides of the front bumper direct the air around the vehicle’s front end with minimum loss. The flared side sills prevent the air from flowing into the underbody area and shield the rear tyres from air flowing onto them. In addition, small spoilers and trim panels guide the flow of air on the underbody.”

There’s also a roller blind on the front radiator which only opens when the battery and power units need to be cooled.

We’ve no idea yet when the ID.7 will be available to lease.

But in the meantime you can enjoy the ID.5 coupe-SUV with Select Car Leasing from £508 per month*.
