Here’s a first look at a new plug-in hybrid version of the Volkswagen California camper van.
This month VW is celebrating the 35th anniversary of its much sought-after California, with the first model - based on the ‘T3’ VW Bus - having appeared back in 1988.
To mark the occasion the German firm has revealed a California Concept - which has a modern hybrid powertrain.
That’s brand new for the California Camper, which can only be leased right now with a traditional 2.0 litre diesel engine. The VW Multivan MPV can, however, be enjoyed as a plug-in hybrid, and it gets an electric range of around 30 miles.
And there will be plenty of VW bus lovers who will hope the plug-in hybrid California makes it from the design page to full development.
A Volkswagen spokesperson says: “Based on the long Multivan, the California of tomorrow is once again unique in its class. For the first time, the California Concept also offers the advantages of plug-in hybrid technology for even more flexibility and a remarkable level of comfort on the road. It is powerful, economical and stands for future-oriented and responsible mobility with its all-electric range.”
The California Concept will be unveiled properly later this month at the Caravan Salon trade fair in Düsseldorf, Germany.
For now, the California you can enjoy is the 6.1 model, and which is available in various guises.
The California Beach Camper has a manual pop-up roof and built-in awning, while the range-topping California Beach Surf gets an uprated electrically-operated pop-up roof with three windows for optimum camping comfort.
A VW California lease with Select begins at around £809 per month*.
