UK’s best off-roaders revealed

  • Skoda Kodiaq named 4x4 of the Year
  • Accolade comes from Overlander 4x4 magazine
  • KGM Torres wins in ‘Best Value’ category
  • Dacia Duster is ‘Best Small SUV’ and ‘Best Budget SUV

The capable Skoda Kodiaq is the UK’s 4x4 of the Year, as chosen by the experts at Overlander 4x4 magazine.

Not all Skoda Kodiaqs come with all-wheel drive as standard.

You’ll need to lease a model at the SE L grade or above to enjoy a 2.0-litre diesel engine married to go-anywhere transmission.

But when you do, you’ll be getting one of the most accomplished 4x4 vehicles on the market.

The Kodiaq took home the main ‘Car of the Year’ gong at the annual Overlander 4x4 magazine awards while also scooping the ‘Best Medium SUV’ gong.

The mag’s Editor Alan Kidd said: “There’s not one simple thing it doesn’t get 100% right. You don’t need party tricks in a vehicle like this – you feel the quality and usability in everything you see and touch.”

And he added: “You can drive all day in the Kodiaq and still feel ready for more. It’s incredibly composed, smooth, quiet – everything you want of a family SUV.”

Elsewhere in the Overlander 4x4 awards the Dacia Duster impressed, picking up the ‘Best Small SUV’ and ‘Best Budget SUV’ silverware.

Again, not all Duster’s are all-wheel drive but 4x4 comes into play as an option on anything above the entry-level ‘Essential’ trim, making the SUV’s off-road skills available to many.

Overlander 4x4’s Alan Kidd revealed: “This is a landmark performance. No vehicle has ever won two of the main categories before.”

Luke Broad, Brand Director for Dacia UK, added: “There are a lot of people who need all-wheel drive but don’t want or can’t justify the cost of a traditional large SUV, so Duster fits the bill perfectly. We’re especially proud that Duster has beaten so many other off roaders to win not one, but two titles!”

The all-new KGM Torres (above) - read our exclusive review of the KGM Torres here - was named ‘Best Value’ car by Overlander, with the mag praising it for offering an ‘unbelievable amount of SUV for your money’.

The Subaru Outback (below), meanwhile, was crowned ‘Best Crossover’ - for the third year running.

The judges at Overlander 4x4 said: “When there was an army of pretenders to its throne, if you wanted a 4x4 estate to get you across Africa on dirt roads and sand trails, or up through the Yukon over hundreds of miles of snow-covered gravel highway, you just wouldn’t look at anything else. So, to give it some competition in 4x4 of the Year, we’ve put it up against some stellar opposition in the general Crossovers class – and it’s still the one we’d turn to when we need a 4x4 worthy of the name. To put it simply, Subaru wrote the book on vehicles like this.”

Smooth easy experience. I have leased cars for the past 9 years, this my first time here. From day one the process was simple with communication at every step. My contact was Ian Parrow and he was very efficient in all aspects. The curtesy call as my car had arrived was a first too as no other company has ever reached out to me after. Thank you :)
