- Ford Puma was the No.1 most popular car of 2024
- According to new industry data
- Beats the Kia Sportage to the top spot
- Nissan Qashqai drops down to No.3
Three cheers for affordable practicality, after the Ford Puma was named the UK’s most popular car of 2024.
Ford’s cracking little crossover has got the lot - stylish road presence, sporty handling, space in the back for the family, and intuitive tech. There’s even a performance ‘ST’ version for petrolheads.
And the Puma was - for the second year in a row - the most registered new car in the UK, according to the latest stats from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).
The Puma notched 48,340 new registrations - which includes lease vehicles - during 2024, which puts it just ahead of the Kia Sportage (47,163).
What's good about a Ford Puma lease? Value for money is one of the key drivers. Even entry-level Titanium models come loaded with a 12-inch landscape touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, sat nav, selectable drive modes, rear parking sensors and a rear camera, and rear privacy glass. The 'MegaBox' - an extra dollop of luggage space hidden beneath the boot floor - is also a Puma party piece.
The Puma is also now available to lease as a fully-electric model - the Ford Puma Gen-E - which adds to the appeal.
Elsewhere in the Top 10 list, the ever-popular Nissan Qashqai - the UK’s most popular car back in 2022 - is now third in the list, with the Nissan Juke and Tesla Model Y making up the top 5.
There’s no place in the Top 10 for some of 2023’s most popular cars, including the Vauxhall Corsa, Audi A3 or MINI hatchback.
Instead the MG HS (below) joined the party at No.8 while the VW Polo, VW Golf and the Volvo XC40 moved up the rankings.
When it comes to electric vehicles, 2024 saw more and more motorists making the switch to green living.
Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) made up 19.6% of the market (381,970 units) in 2024, up by more than a fifth (67,283 units) from last year.
However, that’s still just short of the 22% demanded by the government’s Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) mandate.
The Tesla Model Y was the UK’s most registered new EV, followed by the Audi Q4 e-tron, Tesla Model 3, MG4, and BMW i4.
What about Select’s own stats?
We’re glad you asked!
The SMMT’s ‘most registered’ new vehicle figures take into account new lease vehicles.
But Select’s own list of the most leased vehicles of 2024 is slightly different to the overall industry figures, largely because we’re able to offer exclusive deals on certain vehicles throughout the year.
Speaking of which, keep checking our latest lease deals here.
